Hi everyone, i have just had my 2nd lesson & it was absolutely fantastic. I have started trotting & am having great difficulty rising & sitting in time or sometimes at all! Does the pain get easier?
Also on my 1st lesson I did this holding on to the saddle which I found easier, 2nd lesson was holding the reins. This was much more difficult as I kept pulling on the reins unintentionally & poor Silver kept stopping!
Has anyone any advice for me? ta very much.

Hi Verne - welcome to NR.
I started riding last autumn, and the pain does get easier (or you get used to it :D ). Basically it's a whole new set of balances you need to learn and that takes a little time. I'm usually fairly balanced now but I still have off days.
When I started trotting I always held onto something - a neck strap for rising or the sadle for sitting. You should be able to hold onto these with your inside hand without dropping the rein - if you're just trying to stay on the rail you can get by with just keeping a contact with the outside rein while the inside one is really loose so you can hang on to something other than the horses mouth. :)
Glad you're enjoying it :p

don't worry, you'll eventually get the hag of the 2 point position(up and down)....it takes a lot of practice and reassurance..have yuo riding instructor help you with balance and posting the 2 point position..try the exercise of riding a lap or as long as yuo can, standing up in yuor stirrups without hands, or reins very loose..it is ahrd, but helps..just keep trying:)

Hi Gods Property, where I ride, the 2-point position is the jumping position, not rising to the trot.
Verne, I wouldn't worry too much if I were you, I mean you've only had 2 lesson so far, and it sounds like you're already doing great!! :) Just remember that it DOES get easier, and when you get used to it the movement of rising to the trot will come so naturally to you, and you'll be thinking "How did I ever find this hard?" hehe Good luck in your riding prorgress, you're doing very well so far! :)
Advice? Just let the movement of the horse push you out of the saddle lightly. If you need more help ask your instructor for a lunge lesson so you don't have to worry about the direction of your horse or speed, and you can just concentrate on your trotting.

Hi Verne
Sounds like you are doing very well to me.
I am a really novice rider, so I apologise to other members if i get some things wrong!!!!!
But i had to change stables after my second lesson and the advise that some members gave me from the site was a life saver!!!
They advised me that perhaps especially with the speed thing that my instructer put me on the lunge line so that they could control the speed of the horse therefore i think enabling me to get both more knowledge about my timing and my balance.
It worked for me i manage to go with out the lunge in a short space of time and also with great thanks to my instructor she did some technical work with us to understand and feel the horses movements.
Hope this info is of some use, but would love to hear from your again after another lesson to see how you got on.;)

KittyK - don't beat yourself up on this! I still sometimes struggle to keep the horse going and I've ridden for 20 odd years! The trick is to squeeze your lower leg as you sit, which then gives the horse some impulsion while you rise. But it takes time to get the co-ordination of rising and sitting, let alone squeezing at the right time, remembering to keep your heels down, shoulders back, head up, and steering the horse!!
It'll come with practice!

Same here. Posting trot here is either posting trot or rising trot.
Dont worry about the sit trot. Close your eyes and relax into it. I love it now! just wait untill you canter!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for your help & support everyone, I've just had my third lesson & it was great. :D I was allowed to hold the reins on the outside but hold the saddle on the inside, which i found loads easier. My instructor advised that I get used to trotting with reins however, as I will find it harder to adjust later on. I think i found it easier aswell because my horse didn't want to move very much at all & gave a half hearted attempt at trotting!:) Also I could actually walk today! Cheers everyone :D

Hi Verne- welcome, you'll find this forum great! I just started riding myself (last May) and the sore factor does get better. I had my 6th or 7th(?) lesson last week and I wasn't as sore as the usual. :D
