one that works pretty well, but smells horrible, is to put several spoonfuls of garlic powder in a dispenser bottle and add water, shake, and spray directly onto the coat. Or you can just feed some apple cider vinegar to the horse in the feed or some garlic powder.

:D Hello! I've used several ones that are fairly effective. The best is the one with citronella in it, which you can get at some feedstores or natural food stores. They are listed below, but remember when it rains...... Reapply.:)
Take a large lemon with a thick rind and slice thinly. Place in a bowl with a few sprigs of rosemary and cover both in boiling water. Allow to steep at least 12 hours and strain the mixture . Pour the mixture into a spray bottle and shake before applying. Sponge on works great too! A similar response seems to be had by doing the same with leaves, stems and flowers from Elder bushes. (Slipping flowering elder twigs through your horse’s browband can also act as a fly repellent.)
Spray or sponge liberally over skin and coats.
Avoid contact with the eyes.
Second one is :
White wine vinegar, water and any combination of citronella, eucalyptus, lavender, sandalwood or tea tree oils
Mix a several drops of any of these essential oil into a little glass jar and add about a half cup vinegar and 2 water. Put the resultant mixture into a spray bottle and shake well before using. Or again, sponge on. Variations include the addition of strong, cold tea instead of water, crushed garlic (although this can clogs the 'spray' mechanism of the bottle) Smells not so nice, but fairly effective!:p

Hi bsjajumper,

I put a thread on a few weeks ago and got a few receipes and I can vouch that they work for me and are certainly cheaper.

My receipe is as follows:

500ml cold tea
150 ml Cider Vinegar
3 cloves of crushed garlic
20 drops of citronella oil
10 drops of lavender oil
10 drops of baby oil (small amount so that it stays on the fur but not too much otherwise it burns horsey in the sun!)
approx 200ml of water to top up to 1 litre

I got the oils from Ebay, I have a good contact who sells the oils in 50ml or 100ml sizes, PM me if you want the contact. Well worth it if you want to buy more to save money!

If you want any more help, feel free to ask, good luck!
Helen.

Hello bsjajumper,

I must post an apology on the amount of OILS!! I did not proofread before posting that! It was 1/8th cup of OILs! NOT what I had posted earlier!!
Sorry for that mistake and from now on, I will be SURE to proof read!

Regards!:(
