I am happy to say that I now canter at every lesson-- something that before I wound have thought as impossible!! Of course, I am riding a 16 year old school-master who likely knows 10X what I do. Anyway, I just love him and totally trust him which really helps. They even have me jumping which again, really isn't me doing much-- I'm just along for the ride, but this way I get to work on my position etc. The only trouble I have now is trying to get him to basically 'get going" in canter. Now that I am no longer afraid, I am ready to go faster, but Im having trouble convincing him of this other than a light tap with the crop. But i'd that try to encourage him with my aids, so any advice is welcome.

If the horse is a schoolmaster, then it is likely that he will just be ploddy (like my pony).

Maybe the best thing you could do is ask your instructor if it was possible to change to a slightly faster, but just as safe horse.

Going faster is fun-but be prepared for it. I wasn't quite expecing a fast gallop from my horse a few weeks ago, and ended up eating dirt and getting a huge scar on my arm.

Good luck, and remember NEVER to look down :o
