View Full Version : Horse in the bath??

I wish I was normal like ordinary people........
My friend, who will remain anonymous to prevent embarrassment, said that she gave her horse, a thoroughbred ex race horse, a 'bath'. Now I know I'm fairly new to horses and stuff, but I'm imagining a horse in bath here. Does he sing in the bath, do you think? Wear a shower type cap? Use a back scrubbing brush? Just lie there in the water soaking? I'm also reliably informed that his coat is washed separately, y'know, sort of 40 degrees, drip dry, no iron? Is it me or does this really happen? What if it starts getting complicated and he wants his mane highlighted or his roots done? Now come on you lot, you are all pulling my leg here aren't you, horses don't have baths, surely? :D :D

Tim! You crack me up! LOL! It would be more accurately described as a shower, with a hosepipe and shampoo! Molly doesn't sing in the bath, but does get a droopy wobbly lip, she would prefer a shower cap but I've not seen one anywhere that's mane shaped, and she doesn't like you to get water or shampoo on her face!
Haven't tried ironing her yet!

But you CAN get horse baths - walk in, fill up, bubbles and everything (good for leg injuries apparently)

Ok, ok, I know for sure you're winding me up now !! Haven't tried ironing her yet??? How do you get the creases out? What about dry cleaning? Sort of take your horse in and pick him up next Tuesday? Best of all he'd be on a nice hanger and covered in a plastic bag !! Probably be three sizes too small though:o The benefit with dry cleaning is that you could have any rips in the coat repaired while he was in, save on vets bills. And then there's that zip problem, you know, the zip up his belly? Keeps sticking? Get that done as well in the dry cleaners.
Any body else tried ironing their horse?

LOL Tim. Not sure that Rhi would allow me anywhere near her with an iron. She hates having a bath. It's like trying to bath a wiggle worm. We area lways going form one side to the other. And the last time I bathed her she had everyone there in stitches as she tried to sit down. I was hosing her back end when she suddenly spread her back legs and started to dip down (like she was going to sit):D

As for the dying of the mane. Wellllll Rhi tried this one herself (included her tail too) somehow she managed to get creasote on her mane and tail turning it a gingerish colour

Now that dry cleaner sound good.

Lol! Its extremely simple, actually. I could tell you exactly, but check around. I think nr might have something on bathing horses in the library section, just go search. You need some horse-shampoo (Or human), a sweat scraper (Its not like what it sounds like), a sponge or two, an anti-sweat sheet (Optional) and a bucket filled with warm water or a hose if you have one. (Cold, if you don't have access to warm). My book, Horses for Dummies has a complete description of the bathing process.

Good luck :D

A lot of horses really like the hosing, especially when it's hot. Mine love it.

Bathing a horse is like bathing a dog, only bigger.

My friend Gill's horse Skippy was used as the photographic model for a posh new 'equine hydrotherapy unit' (horse jacuzzi) a couple of months ago. It sells for about £45,000 and apparently is selling well amongst the Irish racehorse trainers!!!

I'd bet MMM would love a dry cleaning. Baths around here are just a hose down with lake water. The horses always get this wide eyed expression as the first blast hits them (usually the lower legs then back then chest then hind end) but its always a quick slosh and then a quick hand scrape. Oh, and then she can go out and boss Spot around again and the world is right again.

Hmmm, horse in a swimming pool? I'd have liked to see him dive off the board, triple somersault and back flip and enter the water like a knife cutting butter. Solariums sound good too, white horses getting a tan? As for horses in the kitchen, well that depends on how well they can cook......:D
