I'm taking delivery of my very first horse in about three weeks -- have barely ridden before, but dreamed of having a horse since I was old enough to know what one was. I'm 35!

He's 5, his name is Beau, he's QH and TB, and he's tall -- 17 hands. He's mellow and friendly and used to being handled because he was born at a veterinary school. I will board him at the same stable as my friend who has and shows 3 Morgans, and I will be taking lessons from her as well. Beau comes to me via my partner's sister, who is a veterinarian and owns several horses and mules.

I am so shocked (this all came together since Saturday!!! Before that we'd decided to stay in the city and I thought it would be 20 years before I could get a horse!) and excited that I can't think straight. I have to get all the gear and equipment -- I have to learn to ride -- I have to learn to care for a horse -- EEEEEK!

Next year we'll buy property so I will be able to keep him myself after that.

Wish me luck! Any bits of advice right off the top?

Welcome to Newrider, and good luck with the new horse. Expect a LOT of hard work, and a LOT of enjoyment, so long as you keep your cool, and vent your anger at us and not the horse (we can help chivvy you along - the horse will just get scared/bolshy).

Right on, thanks for all the welcomes!

As I said, he's only about 5 but he's very mellow and used to being handled a lot. So hopefully we can learn good habits together. :) My friend with the Morgans trains horses and teaches riding so she'll get us on the right path.

I'm so excited I can hardly see straight.

Thanks, all -- I got to ride him today just a bit, and took a few photos, I put a couple of them in an album for your enjoyment. :)
