I prefer jodhpur boots. I think they're more comfy, and you don't grow out of them as quickly...though I've seemed to have stopped growing, lmao!

I would recommend paddock boots and half chaps because they are very
comfortable and you will probably not outgrow them as fast. Paddock boots
are also very versatile. I wear mine for barn chores, riding and informal
local horse shows!! However, if you do decide to buy paddock/jodphur boots
make sure they are good quality, because some will only last you a short
amount of time before they fall apart.

I would reccomend Jodphur boots and Half chaps, i think they are comfier and better for the summer when your legs get really hot! I also find jodphur boots give allow you better movement of your ankles (keeping your heels down etc). You wont grow out them as fast too :)

I must get on the bandwagon with this one and agree that paddock/jod boots and half chaps are very comfy!!! :D They are a great investment, ever since I got mine I haven't worn my tall boots.

For show or for work riding? I saw in where Muck Boots have brought out a riding version, the ones with neoprene lining. I'm annoyed as I've just bought a pair for winter, but they are not suitable for riding. They are not on their websitr though.
www.belstane.com I think

What exactly are half chaps used for? I've seen them, but why are they necessary? Sorry to be so thick, but I'm new to all this terminology!

Jodpur boots are really comfy to wear and there easier to move around the yard in. If you don't feel ok in them then buy some chaps, I prefer the black ones to go with black jodpur boots.
I think its best to use long riding boots just for riding lessons or shows.

half chaps, protect your pants or breeches from wear and tear, and give u a lot of grip to the saddle. thats the combo, i wear for my lessons paddock boots and half chaps. I also invested in good quality schooling chaps, which I love, especially when riding bareback.

Hmmm. i prefer long boots, sometimes when it' hot in summer you are better off in short joddy boots and chaps, but as the colder weather is coming i'd go for long boots for lessons and riding. they can be a bit uncomfortable sometimes, and can be a pain to clean, but warm.

joddy boots and chaps are mega comfy in comparison.... but could be a little chilly in winter - you cant win. ;)
winter usually means wither wet feet or lots of socks!

I'm a jod boot/half chap convert. I had my first winter with long rubber boots and it was horrible. My toes got really cold and the circulation seemed restricted in my leg as they were quite tight. Also, they are quite restrictive, as they are pretty uncomfortable to walk in and a bit formal if you want to do more than ride. Jodhpur boots and half chaps are warmer I find, and more casual so as well as riding in they are OK for paddock and yard work too. I just keep my long boots for when I want to appear a little more sophisticated and tidier.

I have a pair of Mountain Horse Stable Jodhpur boots and a pair of Loveson half chaps. The MH boots are very comfy and have a steel toe cap, and support your feet very well (I got trodden on this morning by my overweight pony with my plastic muckers on, and when I put my MH boots on to ride, they supported my badly bruised foot very well!). The chaps can be a little up in the back of the knee, but I just give them a tug down and they are fine. They are all smart enough to be worn at shows too.
However, some people may not like the extra tick sole on some MH boots, and it can mean that your feet almost dont fit the stirrup irons, but I've got used to them and now I find it hard to ride in my thin-soled long show boots!
MH boots are highly reccomended!

On the bandwagon!
When I first started I had long rubber boots to protect my easy-bruising legs (I was a gripper) and it worked - but then when I started riding without stirrups they would nearly slip off!! Now the joddy boots and half chaps are soooo much nicer because - well, I don't bruise myself anymore - but mainly because I can actually feel my horse through them (unlike the long rubbers). Made a huge difference for me from a beginners point of view. But make sure you get the machine washable chaps or life will get smelly. er.

joddy boots n chaps, im a convert too, my only problem is my nagging legs tend to rub my boys fur/hair away when he gets a wooly coat. Im considering wearing my best leather ones for general use. I wanted to buy the Mountain Horse long boots but they don't do a short normal width calf! :(
