I have been nominated/volunteered to take part in a team chase at the end of September, which, would be really exciting as its something i would love to do, but my boy is 13.2hh and we have only ever jumped a couple of XC rounds. All the others that are taking part have good horses & ponies that jump, the biggest is 16hh and the smallest is my fella

My concern is that at 2'9" SOLID fences may prove a little on the large side for us. Is there anyway I could find out before the event if we are capable of it, I also have a slight attack of the nerves when the fences start to get higher these days

Would any of you mature pony riders consider doing this? or is it suicide?

Hmmm - I'd be more than a little worried :o self preservation would make me say no!!

Team chasing is usually very fast and furious and you will need to be very confident going at speed over fences.

Only thing I can suggest is seeing if there are any local XC courses for hire and arrange to go round with one or more of the other riders from the team to see how your little fella copes.
If he's "hunting" fit and is used to carrying you around XC then I can't see it being a problem for him physically...looks like it's down to your confidence ;) .

:D :D Larri

hes no way hunting fit at the mo :D i think my sane 33 year old brain was right the 1st time, if the fences were 2'3" then i'd go without a shadow of a doubt, but i haven't jumped him over a 2'9" course for a few years now  the biggest ive managed recently is 2'6" show jumps - as for the XC there is a course round here that im hoping to go to soon with one of the girls who wants to team chase, but she's a lucky girly she has a big 16hh horse who has been hunting before so knows his job, in the past me & Toddy have been XC but its been a bit hit and miss, ive had my lad for 10 years now and could never part with him, and im sure that if he was hunting fit & i a little more confident, he would fly around the course but i think that this is one rare occasion, when i will have to say sorry we aint up to it:(
