Any ideas about books that are easy to assimilate for a 9 year old - I'm printing stuff off the web (mainly newrider because it's the least 'preachy') but I'd like to give her something to browse.

A book that covers riding, (aids, paces, etc) grooming, shows, how to take care of tack, how to put tack, health, what to feed, etc. And the good part is, it's simplified and easy for kids to understand, with LOTS of pictures!

I love 'Annie learns to ride' and 'Annie owns a pony' by Jennifer Bell. They are actually cartoon books, very well drawn and funny, but also very informative without being in the least bit preachy. They do actually tell you an awful lot, as much as most basic textbooks, and are a good read in their own right.

I would also recommend "Annie learns to ride". I gave it to my friend's eight year old daughter and she loved it. I als enjoyed reading it myself - a funny story, lovely cartoons and all the most important information for a novice!
