HI,
I just wandered how much weight a welsh section b 12.2h pony could take. She has thin legs but a huge tummy, I'm 5.2 and weigh about 9 stone. Is that too much for her?
Thanks
helen

I haven't really thought that far, I just wandered how much she could carry comfortably!!

What breed is she?
Is the big belly fat, or has she just got a deep girth? If it's fat, I would keep riding sessions short and do lots of lungeing etc to get the fat off and muscles on, so that she can carry a rider more easily. If it's a deep girth, then she would probably take up your leg quite nicely.

I'm somewhere between 9 and 10 stone and a 12.3hh welsh B managed to carry me okay for an hour the other day. The only thing I did different was get off her back to canter (had no hope of sitting the little pony canter and didn't think it was fair to bouce around on her).

Thanks everyone. I might try to lose a few pounds before I give it a go!!

A Welsh B with 9 stone will be fine so long as you don't do too much too soon. Get her fit and you'll be able to do 20m+ endurance rides with her.
Remember they were used by Welsh Farmers to gather the sheep from the hills. I think Monty's man only stopped riding their 13hh Welsh B at the age of 25 or so, Step in Monty and put me right here. Exmoors of the same height and build can hunt all day with 11 stone on their backs and keep up with the field and sho the big horses a thing or two.

All welshies are designed to carry weight, the B only came along to give a finer looking pony for the ladies to drive and ride. They are bred tough these natives:D

:D
Depending on breed, is it a Welsh that you said? I rode a 12.1hh pony last year. I am 5.2 stones I think, 5.3' and about 90 pounds. Most of the ponies at my school are ridden by little tiny kiddies. You should do fine.

I rode an 11 hand donkey once, I know its not the same thing, but being 5'8 and a little over 100 pounds...my feet just about dragged the ground! In case you are wondering it was for a christmas play, and I was Mary! :D The little guy only packed me for a few feet but had no trouble moving along.

He should be fine, just make sure you don't do anything to out of bounds yet, gradually build up the amount of work you do so he gets used to it and can develope the muscles. If his legs have good amount of bone in them then he should have no problems at all. When you get on a pony, they don't even seem to realise your sitting on their back. As long as your no more than 20% of the ponies weight then you should be fine :)
