Recently someone told me that it is wrong to use a single trotting pole when riding. Has anyone else heard this, or can offer me a resonable explanation?
I don't understand how using one pole is different form having three or four.
Thanks,
Agata

I haven't heard about one pole being wrong, and I've seen a pole used by itself in lots of Reputable Establishments (if that means anything), but I have heard that two poles is a bad idea because the horse might try to jump them as a spread.
Sorry not to be more use

Are you using one pole to trot over or are you using it on the corner to help canter?
The horse could get in the habit of jumping over one pole on it's own.
To ad to the bit about two poles encouraging jumping I have ridden horses that have jumped all three. So this again proves that there is no right or wrong way to do anything!

At one training rally, our darling pony decided to bounce over each pole in canter - the rider got quite a shock! Was made to walk over it after that!
