I had a horrible weekend starting with friday night Pete (my horse) came in from the field with a swollen eye and he had managed to cut into his eye BALL ouch! So three hours later when the vet arrived he cut the flapping part off and now I have to visit him four times a day to give him his drops and painkiller. My poor baby!! He is in the stable all day and night feeling very sorry for himself. Anyway I have my third vet visit today but we have been very lucky when the vet first saw it he was talking about taking him to hospital and going blind. He is definatly not blind as he can see the difference between an apple and his eye drops.
Has anyone else know of horses that have done this, please say they make a full recovery!!

Hi there Kelly
Don't worry too much, my little mare had a cut right across her eyeball a couple of months ago and it healed fine. I left her out with a stiff fly mask on and dosed her eyes twice a day with the drops, she was better in a couple of weeks.
My vet said that the eye surface starts to heal in about a week.
Fingers crossed for Pete

Ouch that must be painful,
sorry to hear that has happened. There was a riding school horse that done exactly the same thing, Im not sure what happened but his eye is fine now. Lets just hope it gets better, try looking on websites for information.
Good Luck, Hope he gets well soon xxxx

My sec A May punctured her eyeball. Unfortunately because she rubbed it and got dirt in there it also got infected which did complicate things but the only sign she ever injured it is a small cloudy white scar on the surface of her eye. It was a long haul - she had to stay in, in a dust-free environment (dust-extracted bedding and soaked hay fed from the floor) to prevent dust and dirt getting in there again for a few weeks, and she did get awkward about the cream and the drops in the end - but she's fine now. Unless you look for it it's not really noticable.
She can see quite well out of that eye now, so there is good reason to be optimistic. Our vet thought she would lose the eye completely to begin with.
Good luck, and stay positive.
