t-rex - up to his tricks again

my horse T-Rex is acting crazy over the edition of my friends new 11 hand weslh mare.
T-REX ia a huge pallomino quarterhorse he's 18 years old, and hearding this little girl around like a big dominant stallion.
i did have to put the mare is his paddock for a day when we first got her, now ive taken her out and he's going stupid, up and down the fence line, trying to get to her.
he is acting really strange and its difficult to remove him away from her to ride. he has been with other mares before and this has never happened ,,,any idea's.

You have to teach him that although he will be taken away from her, he will be coming back, you need to take him away regularly, but in sight of her, first of all just take him a few metres away, each time you take him out keep him in view of her, and once he is relaxed being that distance away from her, the next time you take him out you can put him even further away from her. Once he relaxs reward him. once he is happy with being some distance away, you can seperate them for a short amount of time (say 10 minutes), then gradually working up, to him being used not seeing her, as much.

Is he a cryptorchid (I don't know how to spell it, but that's how it sounds) horse? Has he been gelded 100% properly? If not, this can cause him to have stallion-like behaviour, but he is unable to breed.

Our gelding has that problem (not been gelded 100%, not crypt) and he will herd the mares around into a "band"; he will chase off other geldings that may be a threat; and he is ultra possesive and a lunatic if he is away from the mares (he almost broke his front leg at a show this summer because he had a freak out moment when the girls left).

Get the vet to check that out to see if he may need further surgury to remove him of his "studli-ness"

I too have a love sick gelding. He too is 18 yrs old. Here in the states its called proud-cut. In other words the vet didn't get everything!! When my mare is in season, he is a raving lunatic. They have been together all their lives, they are the only two horse's I own. It got so bad that we have them both seperated permanatly. They can see each other but that is about it. There is no body contact with each other at all. Only from myself an my husband. Together they are dangerous. This was the best thing for all parties. We can now work with them one on one. Makes things much nicer. When she is in the upper pasture he to use to walk the fence line, don't get me wrong, he does yell for her from time to time an she will answer, but they are both use to it now. It took about a week of this back an forth before they got use to each other leaving an comming back. We stall them every night. There is also a stall between them so they can't touch each other, but they can still see each other. This is how we handled our situation. See if they touch each other, they get very aggressive twards humans. This is another reason we keep them seperated. Not just when she is in season. Hope this has helped some. Just wanted you to know your not alone. :) Good luck how ever you handle your situation.
