Hello all I've finally got my new pony, I've been in touch with the moorland mousie trust and they are bringing me back an exmoor colt. It's going to stay with them until next spring when I'll pick him up after some basic handling and being gelded (I have a mare and mum doesn't want a foal from her)
So is anyone with exmoor ponies able to tell me a bit more?? As although I knew a bit about them (them being strong in both the mind and physically) I would really like an owners view of them.
:D :) :p   ;)

congratulations! i know a girl on another message board who has 2 exmoors - haven't had much to do with them myself, but from speaking to her they seem to be very opinionated and need a certain kind of handling!
she is the person who took on the one wally had, and the pony is coming on really well now.

How exciting! I saw the advert from the Moorland Mousie Trust and was very tempted to give them a ring but as a part time working Mum with three ponies already I know I wouldn't be able to devote enough time to a youngster, but it's a wonderful project.
My daughter's first pony was an ExmoorX (very Exmoor in character and build) we still have her but she's out on loan to another PC family and doing brilliantly. We adore her but she wasn't a suitable first pony when we first got her. She's extremely opinionated and wilful and often voted with her strength. She's now 13 and turned into the most fabulous all round family pony but she did need "iron rod in a velvet glove treatment". I had to become top pony very quickly and once that had been established she became very biddable. She quickly dominated anyone she thought was being feeble around her. On the plus side she's strong enough for me to ride which helped and I loved riding her, even if I did look rather funny.
Good luck and keep us posted.
