i just got a couple issues of horse and rider the other day and one of them had an article about doing "the deed" for your geldings. with steps and photos to boot. check it out, it was either the oct or nov issue.

As long as your horse doesnt put up a fuss, its very easy.

thankfully :) i don't own a horse right now so i haven't had the pleasure, but having never done it, it sounded pretty delicate. it seems to be a good article though to get you going and shows you what the bean looks like and all that.

i dont see the point in doing it unless you have been told to by the vet (if it got infected or cut etc) all of mine are geldings, ive had harvey for over 8 years now and have never had to and dont intend to, as you run the risk of introduceing infection/irritation to it when it was fine in the first place!

I've never done mine either - never had one that needed it. However, lots of geldings do need it - see, in the wild, a stallion would have it out and 'clean' it to an extent through what he did with it - geldings don't do that, so the smegma can collect and cause problems.
A vet I asked told me it can depend on how mature a gelding was when cut - those cut later seem generally to need less in the way of cleaning... not sure how accurate that is.
Don't usually bother with udder cleaning wither. If they need it, do it - if not, leave well alone. :)

I am with Kanuma on this one. I have a gelding and there is not signs of any thing that looks as though it needs cleaned. Until I see somthing (which I do CHECK by site the area) or the vet tells me to do so, I am going to leave nature to take care of it. But for those who need to or want too, here is some rubber gloves, go have a "beany" little ball! No pun intended:D :D :D

Hi!
Chev - you ought to meet my lad , his is out ALL the time  !!!! So it gets lots of air!!
He had it out yesterday after i got off and i noticed there was a bit of dry black stuff stuck to it , so the first time i ever touch it to peel the stuff off and it went - dont know how to put this so will just say it straight - stiff!!!!!  He obviously enjoys getting attention down there!!! My mum was there and was p***ing herself!! I was HORRIFIED and told him to put it away!!! :D So he can clean it himself!!!

My boy has made it very clear that if I EVER touch his 'love length' he will bite me in half stomp on the pieces and spread me around his stable as extra bedding :D Anyway, he's been covering the mares all summer, think he's been airing it effectively .......
