Hi all after putting it off etc because of the cost of buying one I've decided to hell with it.I'm going to save up to buy myself an Icelandic, I'm going to keep my eyes open for a foal or youngster (under 3 yrs). But don't worry I will send it away to a proffesional Icelandic breeder for 'starting' when it reaches 5 yrs old.
I know they are quite expensive to buy but I'm contacting all the breeders etc I can find and I'm saving my money (well the money Ted does not eat or have his feet shaped with, if you know what I mean) so that hopefully in a short while I can buy one as I know it is the breed I want and I suppose nothing else will do as my next horse (and last horse for quite a few years unless I win the lottery haha)
So anyone own one or know of a breeder who sells them reasonably cheaply??
Also what does everyone think of them?:D

good luck in your search and i hope you find a good one :)

im trying to save up for a second icelandic for competitions, but Im not getting too far, i have saved up enough to produce a foal with my mare. But by the time i can ride it i will be 30 :D
i dunno, they are such great horses and so fun to have. Never a dull moment, especially where my mare is now she is together with 2 boys and everyday at least one of them does something highly amusing and stupid.

hey there,
I'm a proud owner of an icelandic filly!!! Ive had her 6 months now and my dad brought her for me from a place in scotland called 'Pentland Hills Icelandics' they breed them no idea how much she was as she was my 18th birthday present!

ask me anything about icelandics cause i really know my stuff! (well i like to think i do!!!!!!)

ooohhh how strange I just contacted Pentland Hill Icelandics just before reading your reply. Haha.
I suppose if I still haven't saved enough money for one by my birthday next april I could get one for my 18th birthday too hehehe.
I love Icelandics too the one I rode was called Ardis and she was Nick Foots competition horse and she was so good with me as I didn't have the slightest clue what I was doing (forst time on an Icey so it was all so strange for me as she had brakes which I was so not used to as I still haven't found Ted's haha) and I fell in love with them. Even my dad who puts up with my mum and I obsessing over horses, loved them and said if we had one he may consider learning to ride.

lol ever since i bought my icelandic my dad has become the know all about the breed, trys to convince everyone its the best breed around and the easiest to look after :D

my icey i got as my 21st birthday present from my great aunt in england. The good thing is i have 2 other icelandics i can ride and one is really really good, so if i am successful in the next year or two with him here in germany then the plans are to coem over to GB with him to try and qualify for the British team for the next world championships :)

Hi floppy, wow I've heard a lot about the championships etc. I don't think I'll ever be up to competing in the british team or anything like that. haha :D
So I take it they are an excellent breed to have around??
I'm going to be really silly though and enter mine in hand when its still a youngster at 'normal' horse shows. haha should get judges talking.;)
Does anyone reckon I could get away with doing M&M classes? they are natives just natives of a different country haha.

would you want an icelandic with the ability of "flying pace"? (two-beat lateral gait up too 30 miles an hour. Because although they have the 5 gaits of walk, trot, canter, pace and tolt, flying pace is an extra one and only a few have it!

mine doesnt as far as i know shame:(
I only know of a colt 14 months old for sale for £1600. hes a palomino. has sweet itch (which a good majority of them do as they arnt used to the slightly warmer climate over here) registered of course! he should make around 13'2 - 14 hands. I could email you his phone numbers if u want???

hi horseykell,
Thanks but I don't really want one with sweet itch so I think I'll hold out till I find one which has none.
I haven't really thought bout flying pace I tried it by accident on the little mare I tried and it scared me soo much (very fast haha) but luckily little Ardis was reasonably willing to stop.
I'd be quite happy with one without flying pace as it would be an added bonus if it did have it. I just love tolt its soo comfortable.
:D

OOOOHHHH MY GOD HE IS BEAUTIFUL!!!! But I expect whoever it is that owns him would not really want to wait for me to move house and get some money together to buy him. Shame he is a beauty. But hopefully there are plenty more stunners out there.

Andrew, (the getleman whos selling him) says he doesnt want to sell him just yet. Hes a great guy and says give him a deposit and keep him at his house(for a small cost) untill you are ready to take him home!! (I'm chatting to him on msn messenger this very moment!)

He also has a forjd yearling aswell.

Thanks ever sooo much BUT I've just got a reply from a man with a stud and he hasn't got any foals at the moment but he has a few older horses ones which have some problems which he is selling a bit cheaper. So thanks anyway but I think I'll go with some cheaper non sweet itch horses. THANKYOU :D :D
I'm sorry the above line sounds really nasty but I mean it differently to how I've written it:D :D :D

lots of icelandics are 5 gaited, but some people actually decide to keep the horses 4 gaited to keep the tolt good and prevent the horse form going pacey. 5 gaits also means more problems unless the horse really knows what it is doing because a common problem with icelandics can be that as one gait improves another one worsens. I had that with my mare a couple weeks ago she has been going so super in tolt at faster speeds that her trot started to suffer and she decided it was easier to either tolt or canter instead of trot :D

a horse with sweet itch can be really cheap and soemtimesa good buy, but it is also somethign you have to consider as a very time consuming horse, you have to treat them constantly, they need a sweet itch blanket from spring right through to autumn and some horses look super when you take their blankets off and you wouldnt know they have sweet itch, but other horses suffer still even with thier blankets.

Teds mum, i have also entered my mare in in hand mixed classes. was funny.

icelandic competitions are great :)

Hi Floppy, I wouldn't really want one with sweet itch as a few years back we had a welsh cob with serious sweet itch and it was heart breaking to see such a stunning horse being irritated so much by flies etc. Also because he was my mum's horse I don't think she would ever let me buy a horse with sweet itch because of the expense and because the poor things never usually have a full mane and tail etc.

A few breeders in the south of england.
Theres Smari Steingrissom, he has a few mares for sale when I went down to see him and an incredibly strong gelding that wasnt suitable for me. Hes a nice guy and only matches the horse to the ride, not into having a quick sale.
Theres Mike and Maureen Edwards, they have Oakwood Icelandics. They had one mare for sale with sweet itch so not what you then lol.
And also, Nick Foot. He has Oakfeild Icelandics. He never got back to me but holds alot of competions at his place.

Just a couple for you to look into.

Hi Jay.O I know about Nick Foot (his are the first Iceys I met and first ones I rode) his are very expensive and he doesn't usually have much of a selection:(
But I will try Smari Steingrissom, etc.
Thanks
