I am a bit confused about the kind of wromers that are given with the feed on a daily basis.
The pastes get rotated to kill different worms, right? How come you don't have to do that with the daily wormer?
Or do you do the daily wormer all of the time and every once in a while do the paste in addition?

Karin we don't have daily wormer in the UK.

I would be interested to know how widespread its use is and why people do use it though?

We are trying to cut down the chemicals we give our horses and many parasites are becoming resistant to long used drugs. How do these problems affect horses in the USA?

Have you heard of www.thehorsemanslab.com? They have a worm count service in the States.

To my knowledge, the ingredient in daily wormers is strongid (I think that's for any of the brand names).

I had a boarder who used daily wormer; no idea why. She did a lot of changing around of her horses' feed trying to make it as perfect as possible (and ending up with feed that her horses wouldn't eat a lot of the time--garlic flakes come to mind...)

I think daily wormer is designed to be effective IF the whole facility is using it; otherwise, I don't really think there's any point. If the whole facility is using it, then the amount of parasites in the manure is minimized--but if you've got a horse on daily wormer who's turned out with horses who aren't, then your horse is still exposed to the parasites inthe other horses' manure.

I believe that the instructions with any kind of daily wormer suggest that twice a year (spring and fall), you stop the daily wormer for a week and give a 5-pack of Panacur or some such. Not sure on the details.

With anything horsey there are always differing opinions and it all gets confusing.
The people that use the daily wormer say it gives their horses continuing protection and makes them process their feed better and gives them shiny coats, etc.
The people that don't like it (like my barn manager) say they don't want to feed chemicals everyday- however around here it is common to worm on a rotation basis every other month (6X a year).
I am not sure if it is the same up north. Are worms affected by cold like other pests? We rarely have freezes down here and pests really flourish in our climate.

Up hear in the Northeast, people tend to mostly use the daily wormer during the summer months, if they use it at all. I don't personally use it, but a lot of people have been particularly swayed by Pfizer's guarantee against colic.

Artemis, the cost isn't as high as you might think, because the cost of each dose is considerably lower than a full dose would be. But, I never really compared costs, so I don't know how it rates compared to, say, a paste.

We use Strongid Cx, or something like that for all of ***** horses, and all of the boarders, except maybe one or two out of eighty or so. It's a lot more practical than having to give paste dewormer. Works well for us, I've seen a couple of horses who you can't worm with paste anymore or give bute paste to because they have been ruined on paste dewomer.
