Is it possible to get one, as Star is going so nicely in her 2 jointed snaffle bit?

I don't think you can get french link pelhams, Janette, although you can get 'ordinary' snaffle link pelhams, so I'm not sure why not! Maybe a french link pelham is the bit of the future and you should suggest it to bit manufacturers!

Having said that, I expect some Ultra Knowlegable person on here is about to tell us both why french link pelhams are a really bad idea!:D

Hi Janette you can get french link pelhams especially made from the bit bank. I got some advice from there suggesting I get one fr Taffy. They are a bit pricey though. I'm not sure if they are a good idea or not. I don't really know that much about bitting. As HC said some ultra knowledgable bittnig person will proberbly have the answer.:D

Found one!!!!! Its a french link Rugby Pelham.
Currently, Star is going V. nicel;y ina sprenger KK training bit, but the pelham for that particular mouthpiece is£136 - ish!!!!!!!!! Hence my search for an alternative. The one I'veseen is from Derby House, at £26!!!!!!! Do they work differently, or is the action similar?

Our local tack shop has Cottage Craft French link pelhams for £19.99 - I am going to get one for Thomas,as he's always gone well in a French link and will only have to deal with the curb difference, not a totally different mouthpiece. He doesn't like straight bars, so I thought I wouldn't be able to use a pelham - I was delighted when I found these, and for the price it's worth a try!

£19.99 - better and better :D
Is it a different action though from the sprenger? If its not so different, I'll get one, but not sure, because I currently have a mullen mouth pelham, which she leans on dreadfully.

I hate to put a dampener on this..but the action for a french link pelham on the curb rein will be quite different, surely? Will it not sort of twist the link slightly, and also not be 'uniform'? By this I mean that with a straight bar, using one curb rein (e.g. the right) it activates the curb action on both sides. With a link it wont do this.

Might be worth a try though.

Thanks, this is exactly why I posted this thread. I don't know the answers and I know that are very informed people out there - Tasha! I hadn't thought of that point.

What about a ported mullen? I am thinking about giving space in the mouth for her tongue. Star does not like single jointed snaffles AT ALL. They hit her in the roof of the mouth.

if she's going nicely in the snaffle, is there a reason you want to change to a pelham? if it ain't broke...
you can indeed get them, as others have said, although tasha is quite right in that they will not work the same as a normal straightbar one. they are designed for people who need 2 reins for showing but who don't want to go in a double, or who just wasnt the extra rein for show purposes.

Es, you hit the nail on the head. I need it for showing next year, but as this forum is the home of the pelham experts, I thought I would ask on here, because I knew I would get some good advice.

A ported mouth would work fine, as long as it was a low port as it would hit the roof of the mouth if a bit one.

Im no expert on bits but Im good at thinking about their actions and figuring out the mechanics of how they work!
