View Full Version : Shortening the reins without losing contact

I don't think I quite understand how to shorten the reins (for going into 2-point/jumping position etc.) while maintaining contact with the horse (I tend to give the horse away and lose contact). :(

Can people describe for me how to shorten the reins without losing contact? Just assume I know nothing when you answer (as I am not sure I understand at all what to do!) - hence I would like a description of what you actually have to do physically and any other tips too.

Thanks! :)

I'm not brilliant at explaing things but I'll have a go!

Lets pretend I'm going to shorten the right rein.

Using my left hand I will still keep hold of the left rein as normal (with the rein running up between you little and index finger) but take a hold of the right rein with your left thumb and hold it between your thumb and first finger (is that making sense).

Using your right rein you can now slide your hand down the rein to shorten it, but you're still maintaing a contact on both rens with the horses mouth!

I hope that made sense!

I also find it easier to shorten the outside rein (the one nearest the wall/raiings/fence of the school) first as then the horse will not be able to cut off corners or come into the middle of the manage.

I hope that made sense!

The other way to shorten your rein is to walk your fingers down the rein.

Great descriptions of rein-shortening have been given. However, are you sure that you want to shorten the reins when getting into 2-point? If your hand position and rein length is correct when sitting, you should be able to get in and out of two-point without any major changes in rein-length.

Hmmm. My only answer would be that at this point my balance is not perfect so I sometimes rely on the horse's neck/mane to catch my balance at times. So I guess that is why my reins are a bit shorter in two-point position.

So...are you saying that when I ride in two-point (once my balance is worked out properly), my hands should just be in exactly the same position as posting trot etc.? If not, where should they be? Clarification requested as I think I am confused now! :)

You will need to shorten your reins for the 2 point. Or they will be too long. Your hands should be closer to the neck, and if need be rest your hands on the neck until you get your balance.
Your horse will get extremly upset if you balance on his mouth.

Oh and when you shorten the reins remember to use your leg to maintain contact.:)

If you must rest your hands on the neck for balance on the approach, you have to lose contact a little to ensure there is some slack in the rein to allow a release over the jump itself.
