This might sound like a silly question but what is a gaited horse? I see this quite often and am unsure of the meaning.

it'a a breed of horse who can do another pace apart from walk trot canter and gallop. icelandics can tolt, and a few americal breeds have other paces too.

I have a gaited horse, autumn is a paso fino. instead of troting he has three types of gaits, the paso, corto and largo. if you did a google search for 'paso finos' you could come up with loads of info... there are loads of other gaited breeds though, ten. walking horse is another example, rocky mt horse... there are tons.
http://www.gaitedhorses.net/ here is a website that may have some good info on it.

These gaited horses can be a nightmare to train though!:D :D
Icelandics especially come in all sorts. Some prefer to tölt, some prefer to pace (a very bad habit) everywhere, some have a good strong trot.
Some can trot but not tölt, some can tölt but not trot.
The best can walk, trot, tölt, canter, gallop and pace. If you have an Icelandic that can do all the ordinary gaits and tölt that's fine, the easiest to train usually.
Some days they make up a new gait, trot with the front end and canter with the back....or vice versa. Hákon's speciality is "drum roll" goodness only knows what he is doing with his legs or what order they are going in, but it usually ends up with everyone in hysterics. It's funny to sit on and hysterical to watch.:D ;)

@ wally: :D i went to ride iceys over christmas (back home!). Little Flosi was a little on the piggy-pacey side and took quite some effort to get into toelt, let alone trot  managed in the end though, hooray :D
@ horse_love: considering what wally said, i now advise you to try an icelandic that will toelt effortlessly :)
