I have another old new rider at my barn now. Well actually she started taking lessons when she was 40- 15 years ago!
It didn't occur to me until now but since I was a late starter I kind of assumed we wouldn't go very far.
But my new riding buddy had gone quite far in eventing on her mare and accomplished several championships.
She is very encouraging and says the secret is simply: Just ride as much as you can.

Anyway. I am feeling very inspired and have been riding more often. It's fun and I am finally feeling like I am getting ahead. DJ is being such a good boy I am almost feeling guilty.
I thought I was too old to get anywhere but she started at 40 when I started at 30!
If she can go that far, who knows what we can accomplish?!

Just to prove that there is hope for us all, in a recent edition of either Your Horse or Horse or Horse and Rider magazine(cant remember which) there was a 78 year old lady who won some novice eventers championship. She had only returned to riding some 7 years earlier after a 20 year break. The jumps were enormous and a big inspiration for me to want to try my hand at it too. I am in my 30's and thought that i would probably never be able to try anything like that at my age. So I guess that well if she can do it whats stopping me from trying to do something like it even if it is on a much smaller scale. I guess that if it is possible in your late 70's to be actively fit enough to compete at that level then there is no excuse for me.

What an inspiration! And you have almost 25 years to catch up, right?;)
