Hi, everyone. Looks like we may have found a friend for Laurel (aka Fat Cob) already. There is a 11hh gelding not far from us who has been kept as a companion to a Shetland, which has sadly died, so this pony is now by himself. He is only 4 years old, not broken, but excellent to handle (lead, catch, farrier etc). It would be lovely to have a young pony again - used to foster ponies for a rescue charity and back them before they went to experienced pony club homes. However, not sure if I will be too heavy - 9 stone?? I would just do the leaning across, sitting on etc - and then find a local experienced child to bring it on. I am a sucker for a sad story - and it seems a shame that this pony is standing by itself on someone's lawn (grazing needed to be restricted) when we have a field and lots of love/attention to give. What do you all think?

Go for it. I'm about that weight at the moment and ride our 11.2 sec A. She's perfectly happy with it. She has, in fact, cheerfully cantered across fields with an 11 and a half stone farmer on her, ears pricked and enjoying every minute.

If this pony is a typical sec A (not the very light show pony type that crops up here and there) and fairly well put together he should be fine.

Sounds like he'd have a really happy home with you and Laurel. Good luck! :)

Go for it! I'm a similar weight to you and Benj is a 10.3 sec A. He's ore than happy to take my weight, though I admit to not getting past the leaning over and sitting on while walking stage (though in a previous life when I thought he'd been backed I have been known to jump him!).

Biggest problem you'll find is not can he take your weight, it's can you stay on. The centre of gravity thing is all wrong. I've never been dumped by a horse as consistently as I have by Benj, and I'm 5'9 and can cross my legs underneath him!

If he is a sturdy, square fellow I don't think he'd have any bother with 9 stone.

Pants wouldn't blink at 9 stone and he's ony 42 inches.
