View Full Version : How do you clean a trailer out?

I know this must sound like a really silly question to all you experienced people but I was just wondering if I should disinfect it or anything after I've used it. At the moment I just muck it out like it were a stable and sweep the straw back off any wet areas to let it dry out. Its a wooden floor BTW.

Is it straight wooden floor or rubber mat on wooden floor ?

Make sure any drain holes are clear of crud. If you have rubber mats - lift them to make sure the wood underneath can dry.

Also remember that the floor is getting wet from underneath as well, from spray off the road.

its wooden boards, no rubber (which is a pain cos you need to get the tines of the fork into each ridge!). Its just been serviced and the floor has only got another 2 years left in it. At which point I think I'll go rubber.

What are you supposed to do about the underneath?

I sweep it out then hose it down sometimes with disinfectant depending on where it's been.

If it's been on the boat it gets disinfected.

Just makes having the drain holes clear even more important so the whole lot can air and dry.

Have never seen anything specifying you should clean underneath, but then if you had been over a particularly muddy surface, it might be worth a look-see.

I remember my father cleaning the mud off the bottom of our Land Rover because he needed to do some work on the wiring (problem with lights). Only he uncovered a somewhat larger problem - the mud had been holding everything together and we had a somewhat holey chassis ! Needless to say we did not tow with it again.....

We just clean it out and my dad will occasionally power spray it!! We don't use it that often though I mean we might use it 2 times per year!!!!:D

Our new trailer has a metal floor, and the old one's got wooden, so....We've got rubber mats on top of wooden base, and first we sweep out anything that's large and solid (beit hay, manure or shavings). After that, we pull the rubber mats out of them and if it's the metal trailer, we take a pressure washer and go about the inside of it. The wooden-floored trailer has it's boards removed and then it's pressure washed on the inside. We take a scrub bucket (about 5 gallons) with 2 cup of dishwashing liquid and 6 cups of vinegar and if anything needs scrubbing or cleaning, it gets scrubbed with that concoction. It'll probably be a little pungent, but your trailer won't have much of an odour left once it dries out.

As for the mats, they get pressure washed on both sides, and we take a wide push broom with a dollop of dishwashing liquid (Sunlight seems to be the best for this sort of job) and we scrub away any stains or foulling.

Let everything dry in the sun and air and them put it all back in. The mats are a HUGE pain in the butt, but I know that's not exclusive to my trailers :)

I know the mats are really heavy!!! We have a 5 horse trailer so it takes a long time to clean!!!

our trailer has a ruber matting and an aluminium floor so we dont have that problem, i shovel out the majority of the mess then hose the rest out, our matting comes up once a year to clean under it!

Surely you dont do this every time you use it, if so I am WAY out on my trailer hygiene!

Let everything dry in the sun

Whats that then?:D
