I have found that using a children's hair detangler (I use Suave, $1.96 a spray bottle) will take out tangles quickly, is safe and smells great. It can be used on dry or wet tails and manes.

1/4 Cup of Water
1/4 Cup of Vinegar
A squirt of Baby Oil
A BIG Squirt of Human Conditioner
A small Squirt of Human Heat Protection Straightening Spray (Adds to Softness)
Sented Oils (Gets rid of over powering vinegar smell however not completely)
Tea Tree Detangleing Spray ( Keeps flys away and works great on manes and tails too!)
Also
On a show day use neat Baby Oil on DARK horses Only
On Greys, Whites ect it looks terrible and oily looks as if you haventbathed in years!
Shake Well Before Use and Add to a Pump- Spray bottle for best results

I use baby oil on its own to detangle manes and tails - it also makes them really soft and shiny! I just put some onto my hands, rub then together and then work it through the horse's mane/tail. I then brush it through with a mane comb. Also as nattyhorseluver said baby oil works well on dark horses to give them a 'show sheen', however be very careful putting it on horses if they will be in the sun as it can cause their skin to burn so don't put it on any pink areas of skin etc.
(Also, while you're in the baby isle pick up some baby wipes - they work well for cleaning the face as they are very gentle and much more hygenic than using a sponge.:))
