And that is precisely how I feel!

Foolish me, spending all these months worrying about him and his leaning issues... when all along he's been pulling the wool over my eyes! His "personality" is back in full swing!

I can say this with certainty now due to the following story:

After my latest post and the great advise given to me, I decided to just change the game plan a little bit with Bonfire. Instead of focusing on *why* he was leaning, I focused on *how* to get him to stop (in a nutshell). So, when he would lean, I'd ask for more impulsion and move the bit in his mouth so he couldnt grab it. I guess he found it easier to NOT lean because for a week now, he's been a perfect horse! Then last night happenend!

Because he has been so good, I decided to have a fun night last night. Nothing like work, just some poking around and games. Suddenly, he wouldn't go RIGHT anymore (before he wouldnt go left!) There was no such thing as "traveling on the rail" either! So what was supposed to be a nice leisurely night turned into a battle of wills. Trot? Heck no, "lets canter" says he! Walk? Heck no, Im gonna four beat! Right? Nah, I'll open my mouth and let the bit fall through! Left? Ok, but only at 90 mph!

The thing that really has me fuming though is that for months, it has always been the left rein. He'd lean on that thing so much that to match his pull, I'd have to stand up in the saddle and brace my weight against it. For a week, I've tricked him and we finally had it almost correct and now he's playing games and, instead, its now the right rein! He's leaning on that and refuses to turn! He's trying all the tricks in the book, but this time, I know what he's doing!

The little bu**ger! Im never bored, thats for sure :p

You said you wanted to have a little fun! Well there you go! :D

I don't think it's all that unusual or bad. He's just being a horse. They like to think too. He's perfectly normal.
Enjoy him.

Also, I think it's got a lot to do with how we interpret the things they do.
Personally I think my horse is fabulous, sweet, and smart. But look at the things he does:
cribs (my reaction: poor guy is stressed. I need to make him feel better- others would possibly think he needs to be outfitted with a cribbing collar)
throws in a couple of joyful bucks after jumping (my reaction: I need to become a better rider. How nice that he enjoys this so much- others would possibly think he is being ornery)
jumps the row of cavalettis instead of trotting over them (my reaction: how inventive and smart!- others would possibly think he is being bad)
sits back in the cross ties (my reaction: too much grain. poor guy is anxious- others would possibly think he is misbehaving)
he will do exactly as Bon did: sometimes I am ahead of the game. Sometimes he figures it out and tries something different. (my reaction: what an intellident horse I got!- others would possibly think he is being a little devil ;) )

So in some ways DJ is fabulous, sweet, and smart because I believe he is. Well... okay- I KNOW he is!

Oh yes, my little devil has tons of personality! It keeps things interesting and he's always good for a laugh.

I walked out of the arena with everyone shaking their heads and saying "I told ya so" but I dont really care. Im in no hurry ~ we'll get it one day. We've got so much more than they have, despite not being able to turn! :D

little sweetheart! :D

you know what i'll say - get him going out more. you've done it once, and i do think it'll give him something else to concentrate on rather than working out ways to take the mickey. it'l also make work fun, rather than something to evade.

Kally does the same, but over a small time scale! My sister gacve me a mini lesson on her the other day because she was generally being a b*tch as I put it at the time. First she rushed and tried to pretend we were jumping (schooling in jumps field). Once I ignored that she leaned. Then it was trying to slow to walk and ignoring my leg. Then it was falling out. Then eventually after 20mins of trotting 10m circles on both reins, she gave up and WORKED!

I guess if someone was trying to get you to exercise properly on a nice sunny day when there was much more interesting stuff set up you'd try your bestest to get out of it too!

Bad news is, I think its gonna be a while before I can get on and not have to be tested for 20mins before I get anywhere!

PS I second the hacking vote!!
