During and just after the second world war, when animal feed was in short supply, horse owners had to feed whetever they could get hold of and even professional yards fed potato peelings, anong other things we wouldn't think of trying now.
I throw this in for curiosity value, not as proof that you should feed potato peelings!)

I seem to remember someone else asking this recently.... My understanding was that potato peelings were really bad for horses, but apparantley they are only bad for them if they have any green bits on or any shoots according to the other thread on the subject!

My field management books states that:
All members of the nightshade family are poisonous to horses including greenery of potato and tomato plants

Just as human can be poisoned by green potatoes, so can any mammal. I can't think of much else that cause poisoning from a potato.

Yup, it's the green bit in the peelings thats poisonous. Probably have to eat an awful lot though. I know someone who fed her pony them regularly for years & he's now 32. Like most things to do with horses, never been researched!

No you don't have to eat a lot. The reason why its bad to feed the green parts of potatos (green peels, green shots etc.) is because potatos (as well as tomatos and I think peppers) are part of the nightshade family. Its bad because it shuts down the central nervous system.
