hello rache, when ponies come to me for re education or schooling ,i have contracts that the owner fills in ,to say what is being done and the time limit ,payment ,livery arrangements ,and about the pony himself ,age ect insurance, and we have a copy
each.
if the client wishes to change anything they come to chat and change and the copy is signed again. this also covers who pays for vet bills should any thing happen ,and covers tack or any thing used by me for the horse .
i feel you should have some thing in writing to cover you and the trainer in case of events like vet, accident, insurance, your tack,
and public liability . if your horse is only going for schooling ,why should he sell your horse unless arranged by you.
have proof that the horse is yours and keep that at home .
do not give the trainer the horses passport or reg papers .
visit your horse often and even whilst schooling, and ask how he is doing .
keep receipts for any weekly payment to the trainer .
you would need to find out who is responsible for insurance and ask if the trainer has insurance cover if he falls or has an accident or if your horse is injured whilst on his yard.
is your tack insured whilst away from your property .
the list is endless, but for peice of mind have some agreement in writing .

I can see thats this situation is what the passport sceme works for. as the horse can't be sold without it. I'm not sure but it sounds like a good idea.
