Hi

Am getting desperate! I need to find a school between South Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire that teaches dressage! My local school (where I help and ride one of their horses) doesn't have any vacancies for lessons with the instructor that can teach dressage and I'm just not getting any lessons in right now :( ALSO .... because I work during the week I need to find one that does evening lessons, I'm happy with private, semi or group!!!!

If anyone has any suggestions .... or even of a good riding school who teach flatwork but not 'Dressage' please let me know through here or pm me.

I can give you trainer names but not sure of who will have their own horses for pupils.

The best are the Moody's who live in Pennistone nr Sheffield. Even if they don't have schoolies they may be able to recommend a decent riding school in the area.

Go to www.britishdressage.co.uk click on training and then on trainer database, then show trainer. Scroll down and look for Hannah Moody.

Lynne,

As you might remember, I am just a novice rider, so I don't know how useful this will be to you, BUT you can try my school, Sth of Sheffield. I am doing a dressage test as part of my lessons - my suggestion, as I felt my riding school work needed focus. Or, there is another school West of Sheffield, which I believe does good lessons, that may also be able to help.

And, if you want a freelance, there is a lady here in the peaks who I cannot recommend personally, as I haven't used her, but she is a 3-day eventer, competing at Chatsworth this year, so she knows her stuff.

I will put all their details in a PM for you. I am sure there ought to be plenty, really - maybe what you need is more specific?

Thank you :) That would be great.

My 'current' school (where I ride *my* boy and help out a couple of days a week) is fully booked at the times that I can go :( and the Moodys, unfortunately were unable to help me :(

I love riding *my* boy but he's pretty much uneducated so, although I'm getting lots of good experience in bringing him on (he did a lovely working trot today for most of the session for the first time since I've been riding him ...... I've had glimpses before but not a whole session :) ) I'm not learning more for myself (I want to work on more advanced dressage 'moves' etc). Hope that makes sense!

Anyway, I look forward to hearing from you.

Many thanks

I took a detour from work (got off early) this afternoon as I was stuck behind a tractor and several lorries and guess where I drove past? Is this fate? Are they trying to tell me something? I couldn't go in because there was a cue behind me and by the time I realised it was too late to slam the anchors on and turn in :( I've asked for info so I'm hoping to hear from them soon.

YRC sound GREAT too but probably too expensive, the lessons are reasonable but then there's another £15 on top to hire a school horse (£25 for an advanced horse) :(

Thanks for the info everyone ..... I'm looking, and looking .......

when I was at Uni in Sheffield, the riding club went to Masserella's place. Is it still there ? (It was a long time ago). May not be same instructors but might be worth a look.

Hi, I'm not sure if they still do lessons or if they are even still there (I heard the other day that they had closed down due to the usual insurance etc problems but don't know how true that is). I used to go there when I was younger for riding and stable management lessons. Our instructor took us there one evening a week :)

I've just enrolled on a dressage course at Brackenhurst Equestrian in Southwell, dont know if they have any spaces but could be worth a try. Its aimed at prelim/pre novice.

There is also Hannah Sheppard (was Esberger) at Todwick, Nr. Sheffield, she has written articles and given readers dressage lessons in Horse & Rider Magazine. I will try to find her contact details for you.

The little dressage star on our yard goes for lessons with her periodically, her mum really knows her stuff so she must be good:)

Masserella's now only takes Livery, no real lessons unless you have your horse there.

We learnt to ride at Wellow Park Stables, very good facilities, a 60 x 40 indoor is really great in winter, + outside school the same. They are also in the process of expanding and building a new school.

We also have one of their horses with us on retirement and know the people there very well. I would recommend you speak to Heather there and discuss what you want to do, type of horse aims etc atc she will then be able to sort out a lesson for you.

We have Percy on Retirement with us, as he taught me everything I know. Also we may be retiring Mitch to us later in year as he is an old boy now.

We used to ride Drummer, BJ, Tom, Mitch, Percy, Louisa (unfortunately she had to be put down last year), Chance, Skippy, Corky.

I was at Wellow last month to see their new horses and take a look round.

Oh yes , i know Percy , and all the others you mentioned.Didn't relaise Mitch is retiring - bless him, hes a superstar. I'm Charlotte , used to have Kerry on loan then had Willow (little coloured pony) on Working Livery there. I think i remember you , did you ride in lessons , and on hacks with your husband/partner?

Yes that's us. And I remember you too and also remember Carly, who we still see often, departing company with Willow in a jumping lesson with Mark Cavell, who we still see also.

Small world. We have our own horses now Charlie my beautiful cheshunt cob, and Zak Karl's TB. Both are angels and a delight to own and rise.

What happen to Willow, do you still have her?

LOL - yes i remember that lesson . Only pony i knew that managed to get Carly off .

We sold Willow last summer to a lovely family in Gloucs as i completely outgrew her . She's doing a lot of PC stuff now and even went to Stonar. She's very popular around their neck of the woods and there's hopes for her to make JA :O

I havent seen Carly for aaaaaages - last time she came to Wellow i was on a hack and only had a quick word whilst she was in the car , she saw my new horse Grace though .

Glad Percy is well .:)

Have booked an assessment lesson (with Cath) at Wellow Park for THURSDAY!!!

Fingers crossed ......

Another question .... I'm sure that is says somewhere (or I've heard somewhere) that they also do side-saddle? Do you know if this is true as I'd LOVE to learn properly, I've had a couple of goes and really enjoyed it :) I can always ask on Thursday but don't want to phone AGAIN as they'll padlock the gate when they see me driving up the driveway :D

Thanks for all the help

HI ,
Cath is lovely and a very talented instructor .

They do do side saddle - however its by special arrangement as far as i'm aware. Ask when you get there and they will sort you out , they are all very helpful :)

I hope you have a great ride , let me know how it goes on , ooh and which horse you ride :)

Had my lesson in the indoor school with Cath today on Drummer (coloured cob with hogged mane).

She (Cath) is very nice and seems very knowledgeable. She has a nice way of teaching.

Drummer was a bit lazy but seems very genuine and worked well once he'd warmed up. Did walk, trot and canter work with a few transitions including walk-canter. Then did a small cross pole at the end.

It seemed to go well (though I felt like a complete beginner  ). I shortened my stirrups too much to do the cross pole and I didn't jump very well (I find cobs difficult to *feel* when jumping which didn't help PLUS he put in a short stride just before the jump). I was disappointed with my jumping but it was only a couple of goes at the end so I'm not stressing TOO much. The rest of the lesson went well, though, and I'm looking forward to getting some lessons.

They also have two ADORABLE kittens, one of them is the spitting image of my boy cat when he was a baby. I SERIOUSLY wanted to bring them home with me. The dogs/puppies are wonderful and so well behaved.

It seems like a nice place and I'm looking forward to going again :D

Good for you. Drummer is a diamond. Yes can be lazy but when you get him warmed up he is very good. Watch out for him dropping his shoulder in canter right on the corners a nice little trick he has.

He is a great horse to ride, would not necessarily say good for jumping, but it depends on how confident you are jumping.

Hope you get to hack him as he is very safe, willing and happy boy.

Next time you ride him, give him a big cuddle and a carrot from me.

Yeah , Drummer is a good lad. Very lazy when he wants to be but can work lovely. He apparently has a strange jump to feel.I havent ridden him myself i dont think ........ hang on , no i think i sat on him once for some reason or other but havent ridden him properly.
Cath is lovely too , glad you enjoyed it :)
