Hey all

Havent posted for a while.

Baz has finally put on weight BUT still not as much as i would like.

I have decided on getting Blue Chip for him i have heard fantastic feedback from it.

Has anyone on here used/use it? Can anyone reccommend what type i should get? As i know there is Original and Pro and some others

He is going to be doing intro-pre novice eventing from july but not every event only the ones i can afford:p

Cheers in advance

Hi Rache,

I have posted a thread in the cafe area asking how Baz is. Has his lumps all gone now?

Glad to here he is putting weight on at least. ;)

I think Blue Chip Pro is the one for eventers etc,

I've used it, on a youngster we bought in terrible condition. I wouldn't say it was fantastic to be honest - more useful if you're feeding straights, or feed that doesn't have guaranteed vitamin/mineral content. It's basically a balancer.

That said, on a horse in fair condition, that just needs a bit extra, it can be really useful. I'd check out competitors too though - there are other, cheaper balancers that do the same job for less money.

I used it on an older horse that lost condition and we had some success but after about 6 months it seemed to stop working, so we moved him on to Blue chip Pro and the same seemed to happen again, ok for 6 months then no effect.

We then moved him on to Nesler's Solid Gold and had fabulous results, they were so good that i have put all my horses on it. As the are only in light work and out grazing most of the time i have had to cut back there hard feed down to next to nothing. One horse a skinny TB is really thriving on it and even though he used to be classed as a poor doer, he's looking really good and near enough lives on this balancer and grass.

And its only £27.50 a 20kg bag, whereas blue chip used to be well over £35 a bag.

The website is www.nesler.co.uk

I would second Alibi's point on Nesler, a good alternative to Blue Chip that has excellent results.

Top spec is pretty popular too, I've started Rio on it and it's so far so good with it.

Apparently blue chip won't say what their ingredients are unlike the competition, *allegedly* because it contains animal derived products. Emphasis on allegedly there:)

Hi Rache, I was going to try bluechip until I found out how much it was going to cost. So I got some Top spec. Its working a treat for Taff and is a lot cheaper than bluechip.

Hope your both doing fine. Hows this schooling coming along? Has he gone to your friends yet?

I had Shaka on Blue Chip Pro when he was offf for 6 months with Anaemia, by recommendation of Blue CHip themselves. It's very expensive, but really was not the ideal feed for a 13hh pony on 5 minutes walking a day! I ended up getting bucked off almost daily, probably didnt help I always rode bareback...
As has been said, Blue CHip Pro is ideally, for eventers or horses in hard and fast work, like showjumping 1m20 every weekend or something like that.
For weight, and without hype, Blue Chip Dynamic is worth having a look at rather then original. I think your best bet though, woul;d be to e-mail Blue Chip and ask them what type they would sugegst. If you want something to give him a lot more energy, or you are eventing weekly or like that, then go for Pro, but if not, dont take it cos its worse then oats!
Well, probably not!

Hi Rach

I posted a thread on feed balancers a while back and as a result have had B on TopSpec - like Gemma, I've had fab results. Their advice line was very professional too - finally, I'm getting a proper looking welshie!! I've had her on all sorts in the year I've had her and this is the only feed that I've got results from. So many people have told me how well she looks.

It's a few quid cheaper than Blue Chip too!! Good luck.

It's www.topspec.com surprisingly enough:)

Top spec certainly hasn't made Rio go nutty in the least, but the whole idea of feed balancers is to improve the efficiency of the digestion and uptake of nutrients.
I could imagine in some cases this could lead to excess energy and hence nuttyness if the hard feed isn't reduced accordingly.

Have heard from a few people that BlueChip is not really as great as it is made out to be, but that TopSpec is very good.. not had experience with any balancers myself, but I think I'd personally go for the TopSpec.

Not very helpful of me!!

Equi-jewel is pretty good as a weight gain product.
