Hi everyone,

Just wondering - with summer ever aproaching if anyone has ever kept their horses in during the day and turned out for the night?

Mouhn has very sensitive skin, and although he doesn't suffer from sweet itch, gets terribly upset by insects in summer.

I have read about this, but wanted to know if anyone had tried it, and if it helped, maybe if brought in at the prone fly dive bombing times !

I know that this hot weather is some time off yet, but I have been pondering over this for several weeks already !

Any advice appreciated, as usual.

Yup. Here in Australia it works well. It also keeps them off the grass.

One of mine comes in during the day and stays out at night, with no problems.

Hi there.

I will be doing this with my mare this year if it becomes too hot in the day. I only got her in August last year so I havn't tried it yet. A couple of friends of mine do this and say it works well and keeps the horses from being pestered.

I only hope my mare dosn't mind being in in the day, because there are people working around all the time and she likes to get there attention when shes kept in.

Make sure that your fencing is alright and your horse isn't going to escape in the middle of the night, though.

I think a lot of people do this when weather is very hot so why not give it a go and see how you get on, like I'm going to.

We do it all the time here in the States, Clare. It keeps the bugs away and is also much cooler when the days heat up. The horses spend the daytime snoozing in their stalls and seem perfectly happy. I am also thinking of using flysheets this summer; I just read an article on them that highly recommended their use for protecting against insects and sunburn.

Hi everyone,

Thank you all for your replies - I will definately give it a try this summer.

Mouhn is good at being in anyway, and as all the horses there will be turned out totally, he will have company in the evenings/nights.

I will let you know how it goes when we are in summer - roll on!
