I am gonig to my first english riding lesson on Sunday and i was wondering which of these shoes would be best. I asked my insructor and she said someting with a heel and a smooth sole, well i dont have a shoe with both, i have:

- a pair of hiking boots with a heel of about 1/4 to 1/2 of an inch, these boots have ridges on the sole, are not too wide and have a sturdy build and go above my ankle. From what i have read these are not great because the sole is not smooth.

- a pair of running shoes with no heel but a smooth sole. Not to wide and do not cover my ankle and are rather flimsy compared to the other boots. These are'nt great because they have no heel.

- a pair of wellies, black with a bit of a heel.

Which pair of shoes in your opinion would be best?

I am only going to wear these as a temporary solution if i decide i want to keep riding i will buy a pair built for riding.

Thanks

Either hiking boots or wellies, dont worry about the ridges though, most of the riding boots have them, they supposed to help you with not sliding in the stirrup, since some schools dont have rubber pads in their irons.

Yep, wellies or hiking boots. Trainers could mean that your foot slides forward and gets stuck so is potentially more 'dangerous' than the other two PLUS there's nothing to help protect you if you get stood on (which HOPEFULLY you won't but I'm still nursing a VERY SORE little toe after getting stood on weeks ago ....).

Not the wellies - they're probably wider than the boots, so your foot could get stuck, and it's difficult to flex your ankle in wellies. And they're so thick that they can stop you feeling your leg on the horse.

The hiking boots sound fine.

Enjoy the lesson!
