It probably depends on the rules of the yard your visiting and what everyone else wears! Is it a Western Yard or English? Im afraid if its western im of no use but you say you want to wear trainers or sandals, I know in most English stables you would not be allowed to ride in these as it must have a heel for safety reasons. (Plus in sandals you might get very dirty feet!!) Perhaps you could buy a cheap pair of boots? Also for legwear i would personally recommend a lightweight pair of jodphurs (If English) as you would not be allowed to ride in shorts!
Hope it helps! (plus the job sounds really cute!)

well i wear tennis shoes, but many girls wear short jod boots and shorts in case they ride, then put their chaps on.

I *used* to wear 'normal' muckers (non steel toe cap) until I was stood on once in my Ariat mules, once in my muckers and once again in my muckers when *my* boy jumped on me (shortly before running me over .....).
My foot went black, after the first standing on, within five minutes and I couldn't walk properly for nearly a fortnight (it's amazing how much you need your little toe which was the most hurty of the lot) and am STILL (over a month later) having problems with that toe ...... I NOW wear steel toe cap yard boots or joddy boots with gaiters!

ooh gosh id never wear open toed shoes or trainers to lead, but if its only a young (sort of lightweight foal it should be fine with trainers, sneakers)

Be very, VERY careful of wearing sneakers while riding!! If your foot slips, they can get stuck in the stirrup and create a huge safety hazard. Also, they are a lot softer than riding boots, therefore making it easier to have your toes broken. I know about both of these situations from personal experience :(
