for western riding you might want to get...
1) jeans..regular ones or they make some especially for riding without and inside seam
2) Boots
3) comfy shirt
4) helmet...not many western riders wear these but I always feel safer with one on.
Thats about it. Later on you might want a cowboy hat:D

Lol..yeah You see lots of cowboy hats in Texas!

I agree with meagan for what clothes to wear when riding western. I wouldnt recommened wearing shorts (cant that give you bruises, scrathes, or something like that?), but if Im wrong please tell me!

A comfy pair of boots and some jeans that are well-fitted (not so tight as to restrict your movement, but without too much extra fabric that can buckle). I'm not a big fan of tight hip-huggers for riding, as the shorter rise can lead to discomfort in places that you don't want to be uncomfortable. I will also mention that a helmet is a good idea, whatever style of riding you are doing.

If you have a little extra to spend and you plan to be in the saddle quite a bit, it would be nice to have a pair of chaps. They aren't necessary, but they are nice to have for long rides. You can also throw them over shorts in hot weather or wear them over bottoms that wouldn't otherwise be suitable for riding.

all you need are some wrangler jeans, boots, and a comfy shirt. My opion is i dont think you need a specific kind of shirt i always wear a comfy tee shirt and that works fine i even ride a tank top sometimes. ( but you cant wear these at horse shows) And i dont ride with a helmet but my mom wants me too. but i guess if you r just starting out riding you would need one.

For practicing, its good to ride in a helmet, just to be safe. Uh...jeans and either and t-shirt, tanktop, or sweatshirt if its cold. Boots with a heal and thats about it. Thants all i can think of unless u want a list of show clothes....i can so help u there!!

Hav fun!!!
