Hello,
I am having problems catering. I just can't seem to balance myself. I tried cantering today and it just didn't work out like I thought it would. People says it's comfortable but I think it's not. I was riding western and not english so I don't know if that's why. I was on lunge line. I got into a trot and then a 1 second canter. It jerked me around. I tried standing in the saddle but couldn't. Tried posting but coudn't. I would enjoy all sudjestions and tips. Thanks!

Didn't your instructor go through the movement with you and explain exactly how you should sit and move at the canter?

If not I really would be looking for another instructor, the fact you have tried to stand and post makes me think that your instructor didn't pick up on your lack of balance and show you how to do it.

Wally is correct! A canter can be bumpy/scary/painful if you haven't been shown how to move with it. If you're not taking lessons, here are my suggestions:

1) practice trotting until you can sit comfortably (try leaning back a little)
2) Ask for the lope on a corner or coming out of a circle
3) Think about leaning back when you canter and following the horse with your hips, back and hands.
