Hi,

Yesterday when I went to my lesson there was a new pony waiting for me, much smaller than Im used to. He was 14hh - I normally ride 15.2hh - 17hh horses.

Well this small chap was very forward going and kept insisting we go fast and hated being told to slow down or stop (or it was me not giving strong enough signals) Only been back riding for 6 weeks after a 12 year gap.

He was the bounciest wee chap Ive ever rode too, but I was starting to get the hang of his speed so my instructor told me to ask him for a canter - well - Crash! he sped off, never slowed down for the corner - I lost balance and Ouch!

Took me 30 minutes to get up and was in a lot of pain around my knee area, 10 inches above the knee and 10 inches below the knee of my right leg. I was sent to the hospital where they suspected a smashed kneecap and booked me into theatre to get pins put in, but was awaiting confirmation from further xrays, luckily they now think I may have got away with it, so started prodding and squeezing - where the pain made me collapse and I was put on oxygen. Now the next 36 hours are crucial to see if I get to go on holiday on Monday!

But its not put me off, soon as Im better I will be back in the saddle! and I cant wait! I told my fiancee - If I didnt want to fall off a horse I wouldn't get on one in the first place! :)

I may be a little nervous to canter on the young chap to start with, but my aim is to eventually master a canter on him..

wow... you are incredibly dedicated and have tonnes of confidence! I gotta say I was exactly the same when I snapped my wrist (wanting to get back in the saddle) i actually rode again when I had my wrist in a cast!

Hi,

Thanks everyone for all your kind words, I've been rubbing witch hazel mixed with arnica on my bruises and swelling and its really helping. If the swelling and numbness goes down then I think Im in the clear :) its down a little so far! It feels really weird though for a large area about the size of of a tea plate, my leg is totally numb, when I rub the ointments on I dont feel myself doing it, I could stick pins into it and I wouldnt feel a thing!

Still cant wait to get back into the saddle :)

Ow that sounds really really painful, so did the xrays say that you had smashed up your knee but you didnt need pins or that you had just badly bruised it? I swear by arnica, brilliant stuff.

I hope you feel better soon. We should start our own personal coping with injury club

Aw, get well soon!

It's frightening how seriously you can get injured in a lesson. I presume you were in an enclosed space, perhaps an arena. I tend to think that if you are enclosed, you're so much safer, but accidents can still happen.

Hi,

We were in an enclosed indoor school, and the x-rays showed signs of something there in my knee and the doctor felt something, but hes sure it was just bruised blood, but there was so much swelling, if it has not started getting better by Friday hes going to take more x-rays then he will decide if I need surgery.

We should start our little "coping with injuries" club :) although Im sitting here in some discomfort and pain just now - Im determined to learn to ride any horse and not just the bigger ones with the larger strides... just hopefully I will get my balance better, although this forum is really great so far I have found tons and tons of tips on balance and stuff :)
