Hi,
I'm new here and i hav a about switching disiplines. Ok, I have been riding Western for about a year and i really like it, but i want to do show jumping. My instructor likes that i am doing well with western, but im getting bored with it and need a change. I dont know how to tell my instructor. Can you give me some advice?
I started out riding english, but my old instructor moved to fast, so i quit. Another problem i am having, is cantering in my 2point. I get scared that i am going to lean to far foward an fall off because of the way my horses neck is held. Can you give me any advice on how to be more confident and not feel so scared?

Thanx.

If you feel like you are going to fall off, over his neck, then you are leaning too far forwards. Keep your lower leg in it's normal position and have you hip in line with your heel, as usual. Lean forwards without leaning on the horses neck. If you do this at home you'll understand. Just do it in the room now. Stand up, spread your legs, bend at the knee, stick your butt out a bit and lean forwards. because of the centre of gravity you should be balanced. If you feel yourself tipping forwards, the centre of gravitiy is lost.

Of course it will be harder applying tis to riding, but just practice in between your lessons on your horse (from the wayyou wrote that, I am guessing her is yours?).

Thanx Jay-O.

I used your advice today and applied it to the trot and it worked. I felt good and i wasnt nervous. Now, I really dont know wether i should switch to english or stick with western. English or western? English or Western? Its like i have a broken record playing nonstop in my head!! :o ! I dont know wut to do anymore. I luv riding and i am never going to give it up unless i absolutely have to, but i just dont know wether i want to switch.
The hardest part will be confronting my instructor and telling him how i feel. Do u have any suggestions or any one u know?

Good job on feeling more secure, my horse has problems just going into the canter lol but about telling your trainer. Just go up to him and explain that you would really feel like a change and you really would like to try English, he should understand. If your pretty close to your trainer, compliment him a bunch and give him a big hug to make him feel better, lol I love hugs
