Hi! My horse loves apples but I just read in a magazine that the green apples may not be good for them to have?
Does anyone know if this is true? And if so why?
Thank you very much!

I know that it is true that you should not feed unripe apples because they are high in acidity and are so bad for the stomach. However I have never heard anything about feeding ripe green apples to horses, however maybe it is discouraged for the same reasons as above. I suppose red apples do taste sweeter!

Apples may be a fruit but they are not 'succulents' like carrots/Parsnips.
This is because they are highly acidic and the bacteria in the horse's stomach may have trouble digesting a large amount of apple.
So you can still give apples every now and again - just not everday.
Its not just green apples though as its the same in any apple.
I dont see why you can stop giving your horse the amount you give though as it seems there have no problems up to know so there should not be in the future.
Everyone who goes by what a bunch of scientists say about changes in diet give colic is a load of rubbish in a lot of horses. Maybe not competition horses but everyday horses/ponies never seem to have a problem with lots of apples and big feeds of whatever the owner wants to give em

My two girls get an apple everyday in their feed - sometimes a red one, sometimes a green one. They've never suffered any digestive upsets because of it. The only kind of apple I wouldn't give them is a cooking apple because they are too sour.

The magazine might mean cooking apples as your not supposed to feed those to horses.....i think.....well i don't anyway as maplebeck they're sour and i think they might be more acidy than other apples
