View Full Version : Advice on choosing the right bit

Do the Dew

Info about my situation:
I ride a tempermental bay TB gelding. His name is Dewey and I have tried so many different kinds of bits on him. He can be very heavy on the bit and pulls a lot. Therefore, he has no leverage. For instance, I have used a plain twisted full-cheek snaffle, a kimberwicke (which has too much lift), dee-rings, Dr. Bristol bits, and a jointed pelham. As you can see, I have tired out many different kinds.

The best so far has been the jointed pelham which has better turning and very good leverage. But I have noticed that he goes behind the bit (if you know what I mean) but has a great frame. After using the pelham one day, I switched back to a slow twist dee-ring. He was so heavy on the bit that I could not even lift him off of his sholders! The pelham had made him heavy and now he has a harder mouth.

My question to you:

Since I love dee-rings, all I want to know is what kind I should get. Whether it is one with copper rollers or a type that mainly helps with leverage.

If you know of a good kind to try out, just let me know.
