considering angel has already taken just over a third of her mane off by rubbing (she has sweet itch), i think i should probably hog the rest of her mane, so that it will at least grow back nicely after the summer, and it would also make the whole anti-fly management a lot easier, as flies seem to LOVE her mane ...
now, ive never hogged a horses mane before and am not sure where to start. her previous owner (she is properly MINE as of today :D still waiting for the paperwork though!) hogged her mane last summer and just got some scissors and started chopping.
is that an okay thing to do? i do not have clippers and i dont think itd be worth 'clipper-training' angel just for that, because she wont be clipped at all, ever, as she lives out and things.

I think its fair to hog her if its going to help her and its not for showing (I dont like a hogged mane pureply for showing reasons really). She will no doubt feel the benifits of a hogged mane and ts easier maintainence for you with al the creams and stuff you have to do...
If you can do a neat job with a pair of scissors, use those. I am just thinking and Hardy's mane at the yard. He has major sweet itch and is hogged. I am sure they use clippers though. He is a hardy (no pun intended) welsh with a mane as thick as a bush (or three)!

nah, not for showing (i dont compete). even though it pains me to see her mane go (i'll leave her fuzzy semi-blonde forelock though, as its sticking up almost horizintally anyway and is not very long), i think the sooner i do it the better. i have a pair of good scissors with rounded edges, so i think ill use those, as i dont want to accidentally scewer her if anything untoward happens!

most ppl i no do it with clipper but i think u can do it with sissors it just takes longer, one of my friends has to as her horse thinks the clippers are gunna eat him! hehe
a lot of ppl hog if the hoprse has sweet itch but if the flies bug her i would keep the forlock on to keep them away from her eyes and face a bit if u are not shwing, lots of ppl do this in the summer, and if ** growing it back then it shouldn't matter

Get some curved fetlock scissors, they do a decent enough job. I used to do Kina's Fjord cut with them.
Seems to work.

ah, too late! the deed has been done earlier today, with my 'good' pair of scissors .... from a birdseye perspective (ie when im riding) it looks a bit dodgy, but from the side it looks alright i think.
the chopping bit was horrible though, i felt so bad :(
