Why me? Sigh!!!

I've just discovered the best bit for my boy. Its any bit as long as its too big (as in wide). I borrowed a hanging snaffle from a friend and although it was too big used it for a while. My boy went really well in it so I went and bought him one, only the right size. Well back to square one, head in air, resisting on just a really light contact etc. Put big bit back in and guess what, beautifully round, no resistance and a joy to ride! Iv'e now tried other bits at the correct size and he's "orrible", put him in a large bit and he's fine. Does it really matter? I know I'll lose marks in dressage as it looks like I've got too much weight in one hand, any advice appreciated.
