many people seem to use aloe vera products on their sweet itch horses ...

would you recommend aloe for sweet itch? does it help to reduce the itch? is it ok to use on bits that have already been rubbes/where the skin is broken?

what aloe products do you use? are they specifically for horses or could you use eg. aloe jelly used for humans after sunburn (i've got a big bottle of green banana boat aloe vera jelly sitting in my bathroom and was wondering if it could be of any use to angel ...)

ive tried all sorts on stan and very few have worked!! stan used to rub himself until he bled and the vet was realy worried last year and she put him on steroids to try and stop it (didnt work!!)
ive found that a boette blanket, and midge away from flyaway products (put on the bits that the blanket doesnt cover) worked wonderfully to stop the itch - scratch cycle and aloe vera cream bought from tescos worked wonders on the bits that he scratched before i got the rug on him

she wears a rug with neck cover, but she had to be stabled for two days (horrible weather) where she had 4 walls and the door to rub on, so i was wondering if the aloe stuff would help to sooth the top of her tail specifically.

should i just try the aloe jelly i have, or is there anything that could go wrong seeing the stuff was not designed for horses, but for people with sunburns ....

(its just aloe jelly though)

I have had two sweet itch suffers to deal with so far But Ihavnt used aloe vera as of yet
but ive had wondefull results with neem bioforce cream have you heard of it?
round these parts (south east) Ive seen the Bioforce range in most chemists and tack shops as its used for people, dogs and most of all horses and ponie's!
I defintally recomend it its very soothing on the skin and doesnt cost an arm and a leg either!!
i'll find you a pic so you know what your looking for if you do decide to buy some...........

the stuff from tescos worked wonders on stan, anything that can be used on a human can be used on a horse but i would do a little patch test first! as even horses have alergies!! i also bath stan in insecticidal shampoo once a week! and rugs only work if they cover the belly area and are left on 24/7 and a midge repelent is put on the inside back legs and the sheath/ teats! as those are the areas where the skin is thinnest and most likly to be bitten!

ive found so info and a pic for you!

if you go to this webby in this link

http://www.bioforceshop.co.uk/products/neem/equineemsoothinglotion

If you type in your postcode it comes up with the nearest place that sells the bioforce horse products.......which is handy!!

I use the equineem soothing cream for my horses mane its very good ive seen only good results....Montana had a slight girth sore and with some of this cleared up completly withen two days and with the neem fly repelant weve not had the dry flaky skin that sweet itch suffers get so far this year either!!

ps: *edit*

@ horseyheaven: thanks for recomending that bioforce stuff to me :) i've got a bottle now (had to order it in the pharmacy), been using it for two days and it seems to work a treat! she doesnt seem to have rubbed her tail since i started using it and she also seemed less itchy round her head/ears (usually, i tie her up and she scratches like mad ... today she only scratched a tiny little bit!) :D
