Hey everyone,
Assuming everything goes to plan, I'll be buying my first horse in about 18 months time when I finish university.
I'm trying to pick up horsey gear as I go so I don't have the huge initital outlay of expense when the right horse does come along.
I'm looking for suggestions of what gear I should get now, and what I should wait to get until I find the horse? Obviously rugs/saddles will have to wait because I don't know what size my horse will be and I hate ill-fitting rugs and saddles.

Before you buy anything - you need to consider what the horse may come with when you buy it as some are bought with tack/rugs!
If they don't come with any equipment - its best to find out its size before you get it home so you can buy everything about a week or so before its too late and you have to rush and buy things last minute!
What you can buy now are things for stables such sa - Water Buckets, Haynets
Complete Grooming Kit (body Brush, Dandy etc) , Leadropes(at least 2 so you have a spare incase 1 breaks).

How exciting for you dane.
Obviously you can't buy tack or rugs until you know what size but another thing you could get started on would be a First Aid Kit. Stuff like bandages, Vetwrap, poultices, sissors, thermometer and an antiseptic wash like Hibiscrub are alll worthwhile if not essential items.

Wow, ** so lucky!
i want to get a horse in about 24 months time when i have finished my GSCE's so im saving alredy cos my parents will help me out a bit but i would love to be able to afford something gr8 like that!
ok equiptment. If the horse doesnt come with anything you will need a saddle, rugs, styrups, girth, bridle, reigns, buckets (hehe!), grooming kit, just basic stuff really.
check out www.robinsons-uk.com/robcl
and request a catalogue and there is EVERYTHING in there so just flick through the pages and some of the stuff is just extras but it wil basically tell you exactly what you need, and also u can read books which wil tel u what you need.
hope that helps -

In addition to grooming and first aid kits, other things you can buy without regard to the size of the horse include a tack trunk, grooming box, extra sponges, spray bottles, lead rope, longe line, and longe whip.
