Hi I've read some of them.

They are based around natural horsemanship techniques and complementary medicine. People like Kelly Marks and Mark Rashid use natural horsemanhip techniques with much success with remedial horse training.

Aromotherapy and herbalism also have a following and there is evidence that these therapies work.

can anybody use these techniques or do you have to be like a special person that can really understand horses, like a horse whisperer?

anyone can use natural horsemanship techniques providing you find out about them and read up on them as some of the techniques are easy to do wrong and potentially frighten the horse, but providing you have read and understood the method or (even better) had some lessons etc then there is no reason why anyone can't use them. We have been doing Parelli with our horses and it has made a world of difference to their confidence and our relationship...

I agree, anybody can, there's no such thing as a 'horse whisperer' anyway, just people who are skilled in working with horses in a way they can understand easily. I've only read one of the books (to my daughter at bedtime), the things it mentioned are all well known.

Anyone can have a go, and a lot of the stuff is surprisingly simple but effective. Have a look for books by Mark Rashid, Kelly Marks, Lynda Tellington Jones, Mike Peace and Richard Maxwell among others to find out more (assuming you're in the UK).

i tried joining up and my new horse followed me all around the field but i wasnt sure whether it was because he trusted me, or because he thought that i had some food for him?

I love those books:D

Anyone can use the methods described providing you learn how to do them properly. As Yann said, there is no such thing as a horse whipserer, they are just people who are incredibly skilled when it comes to communicating with horses, and it usually takes them a long time to learn.
I've used join up on a lot of horses and use T-Touch and NH on most horses I come into contact with just out of habit. They are great to learn and study and handy to know. There are a lot of methods going around with lots of teachers so you can study just about anything you want to.

If you're talking about the ones by Lauren Brooke then yeah, my niece has every single one of them. She's even got the lastest ones coming out in September. I pre-order them for her. She never has to worry about not getting one. She's got all from series #1 to the upcoming #17 "A Season Of Hope" and a special also coming out in September called "A Holiday to Remember: Heartland Super Speical"

I know my niece will be excited to get these.

I won't read them, cuz there's always parts that will make me cry and my niece knows I don't like to read horsey stories that will make me cry. Pitiful I know  :(
