i noticed there was something not quite right about angel's left eye today. whilst she had it open, i had the impression she was 'tetchy' about it, and it had more tear-liquid (whats that in english?!) than her right eye.

got the manager to have a look, she advised me to carefully clean around the eye with warm water and wait what it looks like tomorrow. apparently she either got something in it (sand? dirt? pollen?), or, if we're very unlucky, it might be an infection :o

if it isnt back to normal tomorrow, i'll call the vet.

anyone any suggestion what it might be and how serious these things are?

one of my guinedpigs got something stuck in his eye once and i just rinsed it out with saline solution, but seeing angel is a horse ....

Are the flies bad just now where you are? If so, that could be the problem. Martini's eye was a bit 'weepy' today and I suspect because of bother from the flies.

I would just follow the advise from your manager and hopefully it isn't an infection:)

hmm, i agrre about leaving it for a bit to see if it is better, and if not call the vet.

is her eye the normal colour?

you will probably just be given drops? dont worry, it doesn't sound serious.

i will post a pic of my horses eye when it went bad in a mo

if the colour is diffent get the vet out asap, but it you think its just something in there see it it works its own way out but if not i would get the vet as the longer it is in there the more damage it could do to the eye. you ould just ring the vet up and ask what they suggest you do, they may just give you drops that way, or something to help

Holly came in from the field (the day she had someone coming to view her - doh!) with a hugely swollen eye - her eye wasn't closed but was very watery. I was advised by a friend on the yard to bathe it with a cold wet teabag - (the teabag had been steeped in boiling water). I did this a few times throughout the day and by the next morning it started to go down. I don't know if this was as a result of the teabag or whether that was just an old wives' tale. I suppose it depends on the cause - if it is just an irritation from pollen, grit or flies then it will probably go down of it's own accord soon enough, but if it's an infection then something from the vet will be needed.

Keep us informed how she is...

the colour of her eye was normal, and there wasn't really any great swelling around it either ... i was just worried because of the stuff seeping out, because it was more than usual and , after i cleaned round the eye, stuff came back in an instant.

Shamrock was the same about a month ago, I had a thread in cafe with some useful answers but I dont know if its still there. It only lasted a day or two, eye was just a bit wet and pink round the edges, i expect it was either the flies bothering or he had just knocked it on a branch or something. I'll see if I can find the photo..you can see it looks bigger where it is all wet. Im sure it will clear up if you keep it clean, give it a day or two and it it looks a lot worse or not getting any better then get the vet to have a look:)

thanks for replies guys :)

what's best for cleaning round the eye? i was told to use warm water and tissue paper last night, but found the tissue paper had a tendency to frazzle.

as a general rule, use what you'd b happy using on your own eyes. we get gauze pads as one of our liveries is a nurse so leftovers aor things that aren't up to safety standards for hospitals but fine for normal things come our way.
tissue paper does tend to tear when wet - you'd be better off using cotton wool pads like the ones you get for eye makeup removing.

eyes aren't something to mess with - i'd do as you are, clean it up and if it doesn't improve soon, or you see any deterioration, get the vet. how fly-ey is it? flies do carry infection and can irritate the eyes at this time of year.

there's a hell of a lot of flies around at the moment and she had been wearing her flymask because of that. she managed to get it off though and i still havent found it again (big field, small mask!). at the moment she's got a flyfringe i borrowed from the yard ....

ps: i think i nip into boots for some gauze/cotton wool pads ....

pps: *edit* update: her eye was absolutely fine again today. got the manager to have another look, she said it was okay, nothing seeping out, no tetchiness. i'll keep an eye on it though, quite literally.

celyns eye was exactly the same as lynz+ollies it started off as smallscrathes on the eye so we were given drops that worked so we were told to stop using them, thats when it went white. I would try and get the vet out asap just to be sure

hm, there weren't any small scratches though. i suspect it was to do with her flymask maybe. i took it home for a wash and even though it looked clean to the eye, a LOT of brown water came off it, so she might have got dust or dirt into her eye through that. the vet is coming next week, anyway so i'll get him to have a look.

If the white part is pink or red then it could be conjunctivitis. My horse was diagnosed with that this morning and it needs more than just keeping clean, the vet left special ointment to be used morning and evening.

it wasn't red or pink (and isn't now either) .... vet's coming for the vacciantion anyway, i get him to check it out again, even though it looks absolutely fine again (got the manager to check that, too).

If your vet looks into her eye with one of those little gadgets with a light on, ask if you can have a look too.
When my girl had a runny eye, my vet asked if I'd like a look because he said that "the back of a horses eye is a beautiful thing"! Strange, I thought, but he was right. When you look through one of those eye examiner things (don't know the technical name:) ) you see all sorts of almost fluorescent rainbow colours. My girl had different colours in each eye, which he said was unusual, but not a problem.
