i was just wondering if you know the aid for a flying change. i have been on loads of horses that changed onto the correct leading leg when cantering but i have never known the proper aid. :p

Well, it's easiest to start with a simple change which require the rider to bring the horse back to a trot, and immediately into the other lead, trotting the least amount as possible inbetween. A flying change is different. say you are cantering on the right lead and wish to swap to the left. Then you would canter a figure eight to help you. Turn across the diagonal at the canter, and before the center of the arena, shorten your reins, look left, and use a strong half halt whilst asking for the left lead canter. If properly done the horse should take what feels like a hop and switch leads. Sometimes the horse will only switch leads in front or behind. Make sure the horse has lots of impulsion, because w/o the power you can't get a clean flying change.

I rode a wonderful TB mare who could change canter leads simply by half halting and changing reins. It was sooooo easy on her. I know there must be more to it because it certainly doesn't work on every horse. I think you need to half halt, change your seat to go to the new direction and change reins in the time it takes to blink your eye. Good luck.

Hi, I posted about the timing of the aids a couple of weeks ago so I did a search. Here are a few threads that might help. Sorry I can't give any advice but I've no idea what I'm doing yet!
