One of the ponies that I look after at an RDA yard behaves very strangely when handled. When you first approach him and give him a fuss he apparently enjoys it - ears forward, reaching towards you. But then very suddenly his ears are flat back and he starts snapping at you. This can be after a couple of seconds or a few minutes.
Also, if he does manage to bite you, he immediately backs away from you looking very scared, probably because he knows he's reprimanded for biting.
I don't understand whether he's doing it because he's upset, or being playful, or in pain... It isn't when you touch a particular area, and the fact that he initially enjoys it suggests that it isn't hurting him. I really don't know why he does it.
Does anyone have any clues to his behaviour?
