I kinda wonder what it would be like if horses had a message board to discuss people?! Seriously though, what is the best thing to give horses for treats? I have been using carrots. Just wondering.

A older, very smart "horse-man" (for lack of a better term) told me that the best treat to give horses are carrots. They can eat a large amount of carrots and not get sick or hot, which is not true of apples or sugar. So carrots are what I recommend.

Going back to the first part of your message I know what my pony would say. 'That human just does not seem to be able to stay on me whenever I jump. What can I do to keep her on?'

Second part of your message Carrots.

Thanks for the advice on treats. I don't know why the thought of message boards for horses ever occured to me, maybe I have inhaled too much horse hair!? lol

Ha ha! I think that the horse I use for lessons would say," Help, help! The humans that ride me make me canter around the ring many many times! So, I've decided to stop cantering! From now on I'll canter with my back two legs and trot with my front! It'll give them a taste of their own medicine"

lololol... the sad part is he does do that!

As for the Horse Treats, I reccomend apples or carrots.

I'm sure Kerry would have posted this last April: I just give UP. Now she'd say: how long does it take them to learn (but some of them are quite cute really)????? Carrots are about right I think.

Wow! I would shudder to think what Bob the WonderBeast would say. Something like, (giving advice to younger horses) "Just run as fast as you can. It scares them to death and they'll even jump off without you bucking! Lets see how high we can make them bounce!"

As for treats, most horses love carrots, except for, you guessed it, Bob. He won't eat apples either. Can you believe it? I did find an apple flavored treat in the feed store that he absoulutely loves though. It is the only brand he likes as I have tried several! He won't eat real apples, but he loves this particular kind of treat and no others that I have found. Such a finicky eater when it comes to treats. Happy Trails!

In Iceland carrots and apples are not given to horses, some of our imported horses look disgusted when you offer a carrot or apple, Rossi and Fákur hate them. Bread crusts are a traditional treat over there, not that I'd recommend it in any quantitiy, but we are using it as a treat arn't we?
