I've been riding english for just over 2 years now - I ride usually 2x a week. I just signed up for this trip that I've been dreaming about - a riding safari in Africa. Now that I've paid my money, I am starting to have those second thoughts about whether I am a good enough rider to go. You are supposed to be able to control a horse at all paces which I thought I could do but now I'm worried that everyone else will be much more experienced. The trip isn't until the end of August so I was hoping to get some tips on what I should practice in my lessons between now and then to prepare myself. One of my weekly lessons is an arena lesson where I think I should concentrate on a secure seat and the other lesson is one in the ring where we do things like barrel racing and pole bending and then go out on trail too. (the 2 lessons are at different stables). Also, I am looking for a horse to half lease now that the days are getting longer so I can log more in time in the saddle too.

First, I just want to tell you how very much I envy you! That is one of my dreams- to go a on a riding trip somewhere. I have alwyas wanted to go to Australia, but now that you mentioned African sfafari, that sounds so great too!
Anyway, about your question. Sounds to me like you have a pretty good game plan. I definately think that you should spend as much time in the saddle as possible since you are going to be doing some hard riding on the safari. Practice lots of transitions, and controlling the horse out on the trail, especiallly at a canter. If possible, ride trails with other people so that you can get used to how to handle horses together(which is what you sad you do now anyway.)
You could also call and ask the coordinators exactly hwta the safari entails and what exactly you should be able to do. They will probably be happy to give you more detailed info. And you do have a while still to prepare.
Hoep you have fun- oh, I envy you SO MUCH!!! :) :)
Please post after you get back and tell us EVERYTHING!
