As far as here in the US, a basic shirt is okay and jodphurs are good in light colors like tan, beige, khaki, olive, stuff like that... don't wear white for hunters... white is strictly jumpers! E-mail me for more information!

hello!
The dress code for hunter trials in the UK is fairly simple. You need a BS EN1384, PAS015 or a ASTMF1163 approved hat, beige or fawn jods and a back protector. You can wear either a rugby shirt styled top in any colour and pattern, or you can wear hunting attire - stock shirt and hunting jacket, but to be honest, the rugby shirt is far more practicle. I would highly recommend that you wear a pair of gloves and that you keep your sleeves rolled down, just in case of a slight disagreement with your horse at a fence resulting in you doing it separately! You can either wear long boots or short boots and chaps.
It is recommended to either bandage your horse or put boots on it, to support the legs and prevent knocks.
It is totally up to you whether you plait up the horse or not - plaited he may look posher for the photo, but it gives you less to grab in case of emergency!
I hope that helped.
bye!

thanks sarah, just a few more questions....
i don't have a body protecter and at the show it's only novice level with jumps around 2 feet something, do i have to wear one? during lessons i wouldn't usually.
thanks for all the other info

Sophie,
It will depend on the rules for class you are going to enter. Body protectors are usually strongly recommended, rather than compulsory, although the pony club do tend to make them mandatory for members. Either way, if you intend to do lots of cross country in future, I would try and get hold of one. Trust me, it hurts a lot less when you land on your back!
Also, make sure that you check the rules for the class on dress, as some events (primarily those organised by hunts) demand hunting atire. This is only occasionally the case, but you don't want to turn up in a rugby shirt, to find everyone else in hunting dress. It is also usually acceptable to wear a dark coloured sweatshirt, as an alternative to a jacket or rugcy shirt.
Good luck anyway, and let us know how you get on.
Rachel
