Yes, yes... I'm still alive and kicking! I've been busy at work, staying there till later, so I've not had the time to complete the delayed chronicles. Also, after this evening's incident, I decided to try a different approach. Hope you like it :-)!

Friday, 23 February

Hi there! Today there is a change from what you're used to. Pedro as been claiming to be very busy with work - Ha! That's a good one! I'm the one carrying him on my back for an hour and he's the one complaining about work. Work! He doesn't know what work is! But I'm trotting off topic here. As I was saying, he claims to be too busy to keep the chronicles on schedule, so he asked me to cover for him (as if I've not done enough already!).
I may as well start by introducing myself: I'm a chestnut gal, from head to toes. Tall and slender, I'm the prettiest thing on four legs around here (don't mind Pipas, just because she's Chico's little girl, she thinks she is hot stuff  ) - My name's Chèrie and I have a room right next to Génio (he's actually kind of cute - if you like the gentle bulky type - but, alas, he has just got something missing... if you get my drift). I've known Pedro for almost five months now. I have to admit I don't dislike him much - for a two-legs - and the fact that most of the times I see him he's bringing in my dinner doesn't hurt either! That is, when the boys don't start chatting in front of my suite instead of doing their job, and I have to patiently knock on the door to get them moving.

Anyway, this particular Friday Pedro arrived at the usual time, and I could ear him next to the roofed office, watching the ending work shift. Chico sounded displeased with horses and two-legs alike, as he had been all day long. He kept saying that no one was working decently, that it must be the effects of Carnaval. For those of you from the lands of the TBs and QHs (cute buns, by the way ;)), Carnaval is a time when two-legs around here pretend to be something they're not - pretty much like they do every single day, when they climb on my back and pretend to be riders... yeah, right!
Pedro passed by our quarters to say hello. He spent some time with Génio (don't know why, when there's better material right here - two-legs have lousy taste!) and disappeared again. Soon after the shift ended and Boneca came up leading a two-legs. She had spent all of her work shift flirting with Astérix - fat lot of good that's going to achieve ;-) - but that's excusable, Boneca was in that time of the month (you know what I mean...) so, understandably, she was not herself. Astérix passed by with his two-legs, on the way to his bunk. He tried to followed Boneca to her room (with dirty thoughts in his mind, I'm sure!) but the yearling two-legs with him (obviously too young to sympathize with Astérix's predicament) kept nagging and dragging him the other way.

When Pedro came back he looked at me and went straight for the underwear room - which filled me with hope. A full day indoors and I was ready to go out with anything that moved, even if it was a bonny potato-sack! My prayers were answered and he came back with my saddle and bridle (I always feel so kinky in my leather outfit!). He drove me mad with the time he took to put it on. Two-legs don't loose one change to brag about how practical their opposable thumbs are, but they are soooo clumsy! When he finally quit fumbling with the bridle my hair was a mess. If I wasn't so desperate to get out I'd have refused to be seen like that - I have my reputation to think about, after all.
We were the first of our shift into the office. I gave Pedro a hard time whenever he came up on my left side. I don't like to have my girth tightened, and I sure ain't gonna stand still for that. He managed to get it done, and although he had to hop around a bit to mount (I always find that so funny, I just can't help myself ;)), we soon started our work.

The workout had a good start. Pedro kept asking me to close up to the corners, but I just ignored him and he let the ball drop. I don't understand two-leg's obsession with corners, it's not like we are going anywhere anyhow, we're just going round and round. And still they consider themselves smart! Yes... sure thing!
Those first five minutes led me to believe I'd be in charge for the duration of the shift (the only positive aspect of working with novices!). Everything was going just fine until Chico arrived. After seeing how we were doing, he placed himself near the corner and told us to pass behind him. I was already feeling both lazy and confident, so I chose the shortest path that would lead me around him. I brushed really close to him but, for some strange reason, my foolish rider had his leg outside of me. So we ended up butting Chico hard! He had to take a couple of steps forward to regain his balance (two-legs are very unsteady). I was trembling, and so was Pedro. I was sure Chico would be going after us screaming bloody murder. After all he didn't, but did we get an ear full! Well... to be truthful, Pedro took the heat, and I did nothing to change the situation "Disobeying? Who, me? No way!". I made sure I listened to every aid and obeyed them promptly - trying to draw the least possible attention towards moi.
Chico said that Pedro had "...been screwing around from the start, letting the horse do what he wanted and ignore you. And then it's obvious you don't get obeyed when you ask for something!". The Portuguese version was a little more colourful, but it's inevitable that some is lost in the translation ;-). I found out that Chico is not that good at reprehending. At the same time he was having a go at Pedro he says something like "From you I expect much more, I know that you can do it well!". I tell you, I could feel a definite change in the load on my back. For some reason it was lighter but also more unbalanced, more top-heavy I think ;-)!

After all this excitement I thought it best to abide by Pedro (just for today, mind you) to avoid any further "complication". The work shift was similar to what I've done time and time again. At the end of it we did something that I like as a change from the old routine - I call it "suspense work". Basically I have to stop, walk or trot immediately according to just the rider's aids (actually I make a lot out of Chico's orders, just don't tell Pedro that - it my hurt his ego ;-)...). I like it because I can't tell exactly what is going to happen next, there is always the expectation. Anyway... that was the end of this very exciting evening - you live and learn...

P.S.: I just hope I don't share Julius Caesar's fate for referring to myself in the third person :-)! Today's lesson was one more milestone on my ridding lessons. Not only have I been thrown, farted on, tail whipped, butted against a wall, etc... I can now boast myself of having trampled my instructor - now that's original :-D!
