Main question - Does the part bred arab need to be registered to enter a show? If he does, no need to answer other ones, lol, as we can't go!:( All questions regarding in hand

others - What type of show halter/bridle head collar?

do I need to trim his feathers off, cut/pull his tail and mane?

Does he need to be plaited?

What do I have to wear?

How do you get a white grey show clean?

Thanks all xxxxxxxx:)

p.s - Do you think he has any chance of doing ok?:)

above local level yes he will need to be registered, but you can get away with it at ridersclub and little local shows!

he will need to wear either an inhand bridle with coloured browband or a double/pelham bridle with coloured browband

he will need to be fully trimmed, a plaited mane and a pulled tail which has been squared off at the end and trimmed so that when he is moveing it hangs 3-4 inches below his hocks!

for an inhand class you will need to wear dark trousers (i use black jeans) because he has white legs, then you need a shirt and a tie that matches your browband, then you can either wear a waistcoat of a similar colour to your browband or a blue jacket with button hole and you need to wear a hat hard one if you are under 18 over 18's can wear either a hard hat or anouther hat!! for ridden you need a blue jacket, a shirt and tie, long boots or brown short boots and canary or beige jods (canary is better) and a hard hat

to get a white grey clean you need to use a horse shampo that is bule or purple in colour and use loads of elbow greese!

to see if he would do well can you post a pic of him from the side standing either square or not quite square but close to! ifr i can find a pic of correct turnout ill post it

Blimey:D Its all so complicated!! Im not sure what it would come under, its a south east region arab show, so it sounds like the type he would need to be reg. for. Such a shame, I am trying to look into finding out his breeding, just waiting for his documents from the sale so I can try and work backwards. I'll just go and look for a pic side on, bear in mind its him in his natural state;) :D :p Right, this is him back in about march, he has more of a summer belly right now. And his feet were caked in wet mud:rolleyes: Still at an angle though, will keep looking for a better one. Thanks for the help so far Kanuma:)

how old is he?? his back looks a bit dipped, it could just be the way he is standing though,if it isnt then work on he lunge and strengthening his back muscles will raise it.

yes the show does sound as though he would need to be registred for that show, how ever one bit of advice if you do find his breeding and decide to do a class on him, go for an unusual colour brow band, dont go for a red one as everyone wears a red one. a different one will make him stand out. as a grey he can get asway with most colours. i currently show my showpony in a green, navy and gold set

He looks absolutely gorgeous, certainly has a briliant type of presence about him. Should standout in shows.

To get him registered there is an Arab Horse Society at www.arabhorsesoc-uk.com they may take part bred arabs within the society. They will now all the correct things to do when showing in hand. May be worth a visit.

We have a grey pony, who often loves to come in from the field brown, after rolling in the mud!!! We show her in hand and need to bath the day before a show and then rug her even if in just a light sweat rug overnight to keep her clean. If she does get any stable stains then warm water, with small bit of shampoo in it and sponge of the mark, then rinse. We towel dry afterwards to get it to dry quicker.
To make a tail look thicker you can plait it very very loosely and then leave in overnight and take out before you set off for the show. You even think about doing an arab plait for in hand too, this would look rather stunning.
Using shampoo especially for greys with conditioner looks really really worth it. Greys have a silvery sheen in good light. We can even get our grey to that!!!!

Also practising showing in hand at home and practise more. Manes should be trained over to the right side of the horse, you lead always from the left, near to the shoulder. When showing you will need to show really just the horse, so do not try to get between the horse and judge, therefore being at the head looks as though you are 'pulling' the horse, whereas by the shoulder the judge cannot see so much of you, but the horse and action etc. So practise a basic show of showing off a really good forward going trot, you will have to be fit too, as does involve a lot of running!!! Getting them balanced so as you and they stay together is the key, not letting the horse get over excited and start to pull away.

You carry a cane during in hand shows, not a whip. These can be bought for a couple of quid, again match up with your bridle.

Also when judge is looking at your horse you will need to be able to stand in front of them with hands on either side of the bridle, whilst judge looks at them from all angles.

Best to go and see a couple of local in hand shows and see what goes on, that is what we did and also bought a book on in had showing and what to wear.

Good luck with things, it is fun, and never never take things to heart. I always think the judge is wrong whenever we do not come first, but then I am very very biased!!!!!

Look out for fun in hand shows too, also fancy dress ones they can be hilarious!!!

ahhh bathing greys, such fun! lol. to get fuzzy clean i use herbal essences or johnsons baby shampoo as i find they scrub her up the best. on the show morning i have to get rid of all her grass stains again because i leave her out without a rug the night before (but i bandage her legs up because i hate washing them in the morning lol). I use this foam stuff (cant remember the name) from my tack shop. its a dry shampoo so you dont need to wash it off. it saves me a bit of time using that.

I show in-hand at local riding club shows and i dont bother pulling tails, trimming tails or trimming feathers. i do pull the mane but i just tidy it up. I still get placed most of the time without having the horses looking how their meant to look sort of.

all part breds should be plaited up traditionaly!! i wouldnt suggest an arab plait for him as he hasnt got the strongest of necks and an arab plait has a tendancy to make a neck look weaker then it is, it is also not normal for showing and traditional judges will mark you down for it!! i once did an arab plait on my arab and it made him look as though he had a yew neck and he has a lovely neck (big and stalliony and very araby).
here is a pic of me on harvey this is how you should be turned out (yes i know im too big for the pony but i cant find a little rider good enough for him and it was only the veteran class!!)

No Way! Arab dont have to have there tails pulled and trimmed short! Arab are meant to have long flowing tails and long manes! hence why the manes are normally platted in an arab plait and not hunter plaits!

phyzelda PURE bred arabs are ment to have long manes, PARTbreds however must be plaited traditionaly! they are not considered to be arabs as they have a cross in it, its like the partbred welshs must be plaited but purebred welshs must be natural!
I know what im talking about!! ive been showing at county level and above for over 10 years, i have several major champs to my name and have produced ponies for other people!
i currently show 6 horses/ponies, 4 of which i own and 2 of which have i have been asked to produce for the showring! showing is all about tradition, go into a class at a county show with an arab plait and you will be laughed out of the ring!
my 4 are a purebred connemara, a pure bred arab, a NFXTB and a little 12.2hh show pony! the 2 i produce are a cob and a welsh A. i used to produce and arabxconnemara, and he was always in the rossetes (normaly the top end of the rossettes) at large county shows, i am also good freinds with alot of proffesional producers and breeders of showponies, most of which are partbred arabs!

I have shown my arab/ sec d with an arab plait at local riding club shows and have definately been marked down for it on some occaissions. i really don't want to pull his mane though so will probably continue to do it and do less well than perhaps we might otherwise.i know that 'rules are rules' but i don't really see the problem as the judge is perfectly able to see the horses neck.

i might have a few up in the attic but we had a fire just before he was putdown from colic so most of them were destroyed! i dont think i have any of him done up for a show but if i find any i'll post it! he was a grey as well! absolutely lovely pony and i loved him to bits, when he died i nearly gave up on horses alltogether!

sprite, you might be better to leave him natural if you dont want to plait him! i know that a friend of mine is currently showing a Welsh d cross arab, but has tended towards the welsh side and is very heavy so she leaves him natural but she only does local levels and normaly she can pass him off as a pure welsh sec d

Hiya,
For the SERAHS shows he would need to be registered, those are the proper affiliated AHS shows if I'm thinking rightly.
Happy birthday by the way ;)
